Hi there,
I have this merc sinse Xmas. Bought it from another memeber here. I had gearbox oil replaced by authorised (merc / audi / vw / opel) dealer here in Ireland.

When I start the engine in the morning, usually I have it running for a couple of minutes in winter maybe 5 minutes. During the first 0.5km the gear shifts are more brutal than usual, gear changes from 2 to 3 if I understand correctly are a bit forsed and have a kick. The other thing I noticed that when it changes the gear and the revs are arround 1300rpm, the engine is juming by about a 100rpm (30mph speed). at higher revs it's fine .
then on my everyday trim I'm on the motorway after only 500meters and after that I don't have any complaints..

Any ideas?

or maybe I should go back to the MB dealer and ask them to doulecheck, as they replaced the oil 2 months ago or so..

I went back to the mercedes garage taht replaced oil in the gearbox, they drove arround and told me that everything is definetly OK. When I asked to doublecheck the oil, I was told there is no need :D
eBay is full of dipsticks, but I probably would need experienced advice on which one to purchase. They are not expensive, but need to know which one. shecking should be easy.. :D thanks:thumb:

One thing to note - most autoboxes will shift-up at higher rev when the engine is cold. This is by design and meant to keep the engine at higher revs and thus quickly warm the engine, so that the cats get to their optimum effectiveness earlier, reducing pollution.Just make sure that this is not what you are experiencing.

Also, current wisdom says it is not a good idea to warm-up engines like they use to tell us to do in the olden days - apparently you should wait no more than a few seconds after starting the engine (to ensure build-up of oil pressure), then drive-off immediately albeit moderately.

As above, drive off immediately. When cold the up shifts will be harder, especially if you are light on the throttle.

By the way merc mechanic told me that revs are jumpy cause of the converter, he told me it's nothing to worry about.

So the general idea here is:
hard gear changes while cold are normal?

I have the same 5-speeder. In the depths of winter, yes, the changes can be a bit clunky when I first start out. It only lasts a few minutes after being stood out all night, and never happens again in the same day. I believe this is fairly common, and I do not think it is a concern.

My atf and filter were changed about 12000 miles ago and the levels checked within the last 1000 (they were fine), so I know the 'box is in reasonable nick.

I think I would sleep better, knowing that levels are ok. what make of dipstick would you recommend? "sealey"?
