Hi all,

This is my first post. I hope for the many years to come to be of any help to other users of this forum and also be helped.
I have already a couple of questions:

Engine / Transmission: recently (not longer than a week ago) I started noticing that when driving at normal slow speeds in town the gears shift smoothly as expected from 1 to 3 and then stay there even reaching 2000rpms and not wanting to shift up. I have to go well above the 2000 revs for the it to change up.
The engine is usually happy revving between 1000 and 1500 and town speeds when not having this "fit".
This seems to be intermittent as yesterday at cold start it didn’t do it but did today.
Any ideas of what is causing this?

The other thing is the heated rear gate. Should it heat automatically? I have never noticed this before a few days ago. I haven’t touched the demister button and it is certainly not ON (red LED).
Wing mirrors also getting warm.
regards

I learned now that the wing mirrors' heating elements are turned ON if the outside temperatre is below a certain value. so this could explain the wing mirrors getting warm, but does this mean that the rear gate window heater also get's turned ON?

The DPF is regenerating. When it goes into regen mode the gearbox upshift points are raised so as to increase flow through the DPF. Once it's complete they return to normal.

Sorry, can't help on your other question.

took the S212 to Merc dealer and they also think that it might have been the regeneration causing the above symptoms.

But they didn't know the side mirrors and rear window would demist automatically, this was news to them..... can someone point me in the right direction

The mirrors get heated automatically based on outside temp and the threshold for them switching on is not as low as you'd think, in the 10s degrees C iirc so will often be hot.

MBs have done this for years. The heating elements tend to burn out after about 5 years in my experience but there is no clue that this has happened unless you touch them (or plug it into STAR). Not sure about the tailgate as I have never had an estate.

On the other hand...my car is 15 years old and the mirrors still heat up...automatically, though the rear screen has a switch.

Rear tailgate is unlikely to be auto. Wing mirrors are as described. If you use your a/c in auto mode most of the time the rear will not mist over much. Totally normal.

This is a super old thread but I thought I would leave an answer anyway, the rear screen on the w212 estate comes on below 10 deg automatically as do the mirror heaters, you can of course overirde it with the switch and turn it on manually but its a nice touch
