Hi all

Just purchased a 2010 e350 with 150k on the clock. It runs great but noticed the other day when on idle it was running a bit rough. Wondering what this could be, there are no fault codes logged at all. This morning I popped to the shops and as I got out I could smell exhaust fumes

Thanks in advance

Is it rough once warm, or just after startup?

Does it always do it, or does it go away once warm?

Doesn’t always seem to do it but haven’t used it enough to know yet. It’s done it just after startup

thanks

If it does it after start up and then goes away once warm, it’s likely the glow plug relay module. Eventually the car will struggle to start to if this is the case. You might also see a curly ‘coil’ orange icon flash up on the dash from time to time if it’s this.

Not seen the glow coil yet, but guess as it gets colder it will. Are the modules expensive, anyone have a part number?

He's a thread I started on it a while back: Glow plug/relay prices - where to buy? | Engine

I bought a BERU which is much cheaper than a MB one and is exactly the same unit but without a MB logo on it. My part number was 6421533779 on a 59 plate E350 W212 (231bhp version)

Worth doing a bit more research on if it's the source of your problem before purchasing though!

Thank you, just read your post.
I will see how I get on, was also thinking it could of been injector seals possibly?

also what resistance should the glow plugs measure?

I can't quite remember I'm afraid - but I googled it and found this, stolen from another forum:

You have to pull the cap off the top of the plug (just like a normal petrol spark plug and cap) and place the + probe on the exposed terminal on top of the plug, then the - probe on a good clean part of the cylinder head nearby. Measure the resistance. It should be somewhere between 160Ω and 200Ω if I remember correctly. A dead plug will have no resistance (open circuit). My digital display meter shows this as 'OL'.

Not sure how handy you are with a spanner but worth a good look around the engine to check for leaks, etc.

Cheers.

handy enough with spanner’s, just not familiar with mb’s, always had bmw diesels

I was the same, just takes a bit of getting used to the V6… let us know how you get on ;)

Thank you. I will try and test it when I get a chance. I smelt the exhaust fumes inside the cabin today for a short period

The engine mounts go on these. Usual symptom is vibration through the car. Have a look to see if the engine is rotating excessively when revved.

Much more likely the relay and a very easy diy :)

AUTODOC are saying the Beru gse116 is not the correct part. Is this correct or have their tech dept got this wrong?

Hi mate - as your car is a 2010 you might have the 265bhp version of the OM642 engine, which might have a slightly different version to my earlier 2009 231bhp version of the engine. I doubt it, but maybe?

Why not call up MB parts and ask for a quote for the glow plug relay for your car (giving them your reg), and then ask 'oh what's the part number by the way?', and then you can go off that!

Edit: When I put in the 265bhp version of the engine into autodoc, it comes up with the GSE116: https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/control-unit-glow-plug-system-10347/mercedes-benz/e-class/e-class-w212/9943-e-350-cdi-212-023?fromSearch=1&supplier[0]=11

I also tried doing it via reg and put in my dad's 2010 265bhp E350 reg number, and it also came up with the same GSE116 link as above...

Finally, not sure any of this should affect your fumes in the cabin issue, so perhaps there's something else at play. Might be worth getting the car checked by a mechanic?

Hi

Mine is the 231bhp 170kw version and everything points to the gse116, so kept the order. I haven’t smelt the fumes since, but will monitor it

Reordered again but this time selecting my vehicle manually and it went through fine plus it was £12 cheaper this time so an extra bonus.

Also check the fuel filter, when was that last changed, do they have a heater on them like the om651 2.2 diesel? could also be worth checking.
