Gents,

Excuse me as I am a newbie to all things MB, my command satnav on my E-class estate has decided not to work, it shows the car position about 3 miles from where it actually is, and does not move when the car moves off from it's current position. All maps appear to be the latest versions with no current update in progress.
Any ideas before I take it back to the dealers, already going back but that is a different story....
If it is connected, I activated mercedesme yesterday and today the problem has appeared.
All suggestions will be appreciated.

I could be spouting crap here, but car is new and you are not that familiar with it, (I've had mine a month now and I'm still learning after 2000 miles) hit the backup button a few times and see what happens.

If this fixes it read the manual there is a LOT going on with the new functions.

It's new, take it back and get the dealership to talk you through the workings..

Gents,

Thanks for the replies, taking it back is the main option, however, whilst I agree that the car is complicated, I have read the nav instructions multiple times and tried all settings including a full reset. The nav is still frozen with the Cars position about 3 miles from where it should be and it does not move when driving from this position. Using CarPlay the Apple maps work as advertised so the gps signal is strong enough.

You are assuming that CarPlay uses the car's GPS hardware, not the iPhone's - I don't know the answer but until someone confirms either way then this does not preclude the possibility that there's an issue with the car's GPS hardware (antenna or processor etc).

What the dealer is likely to do is in the first instance carry-out a software update (i.e. update the COMAND firmware), and if this fails to cure the issue then they will probably just replace the COMAND unit.

Incidentally, my experience with other COMAND units is that the Reset does very little, in fact it simply deletes the user data from the unit, so won't cure any issues as such - a proper reset involves pulling the relevant fuse. But I am not sure how this works on yours.

Mark,

Thanks for the reply, Wasn't assuming that CarPlay uses the cars GPS, in fact I would put money on that it doesn't it. I was just discounting a weak GPS signal in my location as a factor, my career in aviation tells me that a full GPS signal is not always possible in all locations.

Could be intermittent short to ground causing problem, wiring dodgy but not completely broke. Fingers crossed it plays up whilst at dealers.

Dealer phoned yesterday, the car is getting a new antenna as that was causing the lock ups, looks like it could be a common fault as reported further up this thread.

We experienced very same problem a frecently after only a few weeks of ownership. The Satnav screen was showing our location in North Yorks when we were in the Scottish Borders. My dealer responded swiftly providing a 17 plate S Class while the antenna was replaced and producing a cheque for £250 for the inconvenience!

Wow your dealer sounds significantly better than mine! Lucky to get offered an A class.

Ours has provided an identical new E-Class estate (Sytner in Gloucester) so not too bad, jus t the inconvenience, they had already had the car a week before finding this and have now had the car longer than myself since I bought it.

Well it all appears to be working after the antenna replacement. Out of interest as I forgot to ask, does anyone know which wing mirror contains the antenna?

Fitted in LHS mirror on US cars, can't imagine it's any different on UK spec, hell they don't even bother to mirror the centre console buttons so all the useful stuff like parking and stop start are hidden out of view so I doubt they move the antenna for RHD cars.

After getting an exploded view from the dealer showing it in the left mirror I stripped the door down only to find not there. On right hand drive models it's in the drivers mirror. Not an easy job but watched some vids on YouTube which helped. Saved around £200 doing it myself
