W213 E63 RMS, issue to worry about or not?

Just had a little bit of a scare - car in for an A service at Inchcape/Group 1 in Nottingham this morning, got a call to say the car was all done in terms of the service (no cost as its on a service plan) - but there's a 'slight oil leak' from the lower sump. Panic mode and some catastrophising ensued, prompting me to get confirmation that it isn't the RMS leaking, which I was assured it isn't.

So they're keeping it overnight whilst they get the parts and i'll get it back tomorrow, albeit it costing me £500....but you have to pay to play I guess.....

Just thankful it doesn't need tyres or brakes this close to Christmas!

Apparently the sump warps slightly causing the leak (MB said it was quite common) mine was replaced in April this year no issue's since👍

Good to know - I’d actually noticed it was using a bit of oil so I’m guessing that’s where it’s been going for the last 11 months 😂

Got the car back yesterday, I notice from the invoice that the revised part is made of plastic, not sure if the original was metal (would make sense as it’s more prone to warping?).

It’s caused by failure of the crankcase breather PCV system. There’s one on each side on the front of the engine. The pressure builds up and pushes the oil out the rear crank seal. Preventative maintenance around 70k should avoid the issue. Seems to affect the LS2 version of the M177.

What preventative maintenance is recommended?

Renewing the crankcase breathers?

I wonder if it’s worth doing similar preventative on the M177 LS1 in the C63?

I think there are a lot less cases of it on the LS1 engine, so probably a lot of money to spend on the slim chance of it happening?

My understanding is that changing the oil separators would be the best way to prevent it happening, but even that is pretty involved.

a few common items that go in addition to the above items
- batteries - I have gone through two in 3 years, seems there was a software glitch that leaves the keyless sensors on or something, after an update to the ignition module and the 2nd battery its been fine since.
- Rear shocks , look for misting, this was picked up during an mot I had done outside of the dealership, luckily last few days of "used car warranty" paid for it, the "extended warranty" doesn't cover them.
- Coil pack - heard these go fairly often, they replaced one.
- radiators are prone to stone holes
- Carbon ceramic brakes - if you see a car with these then inspect thoroughly, on a ramp if possible, look for chips and chunks missing off the surface, they are prone to pads sticking and ripping the surface off, £10k bill if you need to replace! I have just had mine replaced, MB goodwill covered the majority of the cost thankfully!
- check glass for stone chips as they are prone too!
- tyres - check inside of the fronts, prone to wear even if the rest of the tyre is good!

other than that its a big car, takes time to get used to.

Always remember to double click the key fob or it won't send the car to sleep, ref inside edge all AMGs suffer with tyre wear as you cannot alter camber on them ,ill also agree on coil packs they go brittle and snap when replacing plugs 👍
Typical tyre wear

Got to say, I’m coming up to the first anniversary of having my car, sitting at 37898 miles and so far, my only unexpected bills have been 1x new battery, a pair of rear brake pads and the lower sump replacement.

I was worried I might need tyres but given they were new when I got the car and I’ve only done 7500 miles on them, they’re still good for a while yet - no inside edges are wearing.

Brakes are also in great condition too so I’ll take that as a win for another 12 months 😁

That's looks far more like wear cause by the tracking being out (too much toe out) than camber wear. Camber wear usually produce a gentle slope of wear from one side to the other....not just on the shoulder. Camber does not have a significant effect on tire wear, but compounded with toe will wear a tire quickly.

Definitely not tracking its had 4 wheel alignment done, its camber all my AMGs have done the same its exaggerated on the C63s I have at the moment due to it being lowered 👍(not by me)

Thought it would be useful to share 👍

Mercedes might do camber bolts. On my W212, i swapped my bolts on the camber arms with the special ones but because the car has been lowered, it only brings it into desired spec by a tiny amount. There are some aftermarket camber arms for the rear (approx £150) that can fix the camber issue dead on but I couldn't find anything else for the front end. Also when doing camber bolts, you should do the caster bolts too, as changing one effects the other specs. To do the caster, I had to drop the anti roll bar in order to remove the bolt. The wheel alignment showed some improvement but it's never 100% within factory specs given car had been lowered.
