W215 display defective

I found a good site with a fuse chart ( 1998-2005 Mercedes-Benz W220 and C215 Fuse Box Diagram » Fuse Diagram ) and tried various modules, first I suspected the rear Sam module as I have heard of water damage to the module, however this was dry, so I checked the other fuse boxes and tried without various module fuses, after pulling the one for the driver's door most functions came back to normal bar the windows, this lead me to suspect the door wiring, and sure enough as above it is damaged. I think this is shorting out causing the rest of the electronics to go haywire. When I've them repaired I'll report back. Also worth noting but may not be related, 3 weeks ago my SRS light came on, this could have been the beginning of the electrical shenanigans
Out of interest, what led you to try pulling that particular fuse? Was there something else that indicated it might be door electronics related?

Update: just did a bit of reading as i am starting to suspect the wiring in the drivers door, putting the fuse for the door back in makes the driver's side wing mirror motor start and keeps trying to point the mirror down, checked the wiring harness in the door accordion and sure enough it looks like it's had a "quality" repair at some point (attached photo) View attachment 81927 , im sure it's shorting here somewhere, when I get back from work today I'll fix up these wires then go down the other routes recommended above. If I've no luck at all I'll give you a shout m2287, see what we can come up with, thanks for all the help guys

Fingers crossed for you!

In typical fashion, today I went to pick up my w211 from my mates garage where it’s been for a while and I have EXACTLY the same issue! Gonna have to start pulling fuses too!!!

How many miles has you w211 done? My CL has covered 240000, I imagine over that time the door has been opened and closed tens of thousands of times, which will ultimately lead to damage to the wires, I won't have time to have a go at it tonight unfortunately but I am sure that this will resolve alot of my problems if not all. What symptoms did your w211 have with these wires?

It’s got just under 140k on it however it isn’t the hinge on this, I’ll have a look in the light but my guess is the battery or one of the SAM units.

My CL55 had done 260k when I sold it, I did over 100k miles in it over 6 years so know of pretty much every issue they have!

Wow and I thought mine was a high miler! I hope for your sake it isn't a problem with the SAM, heard they are a c*** to change, thankfully haven't had any issues with mine as of yet, seems a lot of people have had the door wire problem as there's plenty on here in regard to them

It’s not bad to change actually, it’s more the cost of a new one if I can’t source a second hand one... let’s see anyway, might not be that!

You aren’t far off what I had, people don’t believe the high mileages some of these mercs have. Another mate of mine has a cls320 cdi with 180k on the clock, it’s IMMACULATE inside and out!

The mileage these can reach when looked after is incredible no doubt. Update on the situation, I went at the hinge wires, one was cut and 4 were frayed, fixed them all and put the fuse for the driver's door back in, reconnected the battery and gave it a go and..... Nothing has changed still in the same boat I was in yesterday, I'm glad we haven't had rain yet but I need to get this fixed, it's -2 outside overnightover as the rear windows are still stuck about 1" down, the morning commute is chilly to say the least, tomorrow I will have a go at m2287s idea of unplugging the rear window ECU, again will let you all know how it goes

Had a go at unplugging the rear window ECU , waiting a few mins ( made a brew) and then plugging it back in, and again no luck. I've tried the instrument cluster fuses in the dashboard end (the mb tech who visited me said his guess was instrument cluster) which made no difference at all. I'm certain the problem is within the driver's door somehow but to look properly I think I'll need to pull the door card off and have a proper look at it. Think I may just take it to the stealer, I heard on the radio on my way home that there may be snow coming this weekend ...... And my windows are still down :(

My mate is a merc specialist, he said the most common cause of this error is a SAM gone down :(... I had my fingers crossed for you!

Does he know which SAM it might be? I'll buy a car cover for now I suppose [emoji23]

On mine he said he thinks rear but it’s only a guess and I’ve not had a chance to look into it any more! Which fuse box do you take the fuse out of to stop the error?

Driver's side fuse box under the bonnet, removing the fuse for the driver's door clears the "display defective" error screen, light begin to work normally again, air con starts working again center console buttons start working again and license plate lights start working again but no window controls. If I plug it back in the following happens: display defective, abs, esp, bas errors, fuel gauge stops working, indicators stop working, headlights come on automatically and can't be turned off, drivers door controls still won't work, and windows still won't work, time and outdoor temp disappear, center console buttons and AC stop working

I really don’t know enough about this kind of problem, a guess would be front SAM (the fuse box unit is the SAM), hopefully I’ll get to diagnose mine further next week!

Can finally put this one to bed, gave up last weekend as the rain set in and my windows were down, took it to MC Autos in Croydon, who I can highly recommend, within 3 hours they had found and repaired the problem with no need for new parts, the repair was alot cheaper than I expected. It turned out to be the driver's door control module, there were some bent pins in a connector on the module which caused it to short out, also caused a Burnt out track in the mirror assembly, they were also kind enough to reset my SRS for me. My CL is up and running again thank goodness, and many thanks for all the help from everyone, appreciate it greatly

Good for MC Autos, often wonder why people don't go to an Indi sooner, might be harder on the wallet but lower on the stress than keeping on trying everything known to man. But I am short on patience.
However glad you can enjoy a dry Christmas
