Anyone help ? ( 2001 S280 W220 )

I'm removing my inst panel in order to sort a small electrical fault ( lighting ) and it seems to be stuck. I've fitted the genuine MB keys into the small slots ( left hand and right hand side of the lower inst panel surrounding ) but the inst panel just seems to stay were it is. Is there a technique to pulling these out or are there any other fixings that need to be removed ?

Thanks

They are quite tight, I used the steering wheel as a lever point i.e. placed both thumbs on it while pulling the tools. It sometimes helps if you do a bit on one side then the other.

Yep,

Remove the whole wood trim that spans the entire dash by unhooking it at one end. This trim removeal will allow you more purchase on the cluster.

Sometimes you can get at the clusters from behind. You have to remove the panel below the steering column which may or may not allow you to get your hand up behind it to push it out. It works on some models but not others.

I had the same problem....the removal keys do not fully disengage the clips.

As stated previously you can access the clips by removing the panel beneath the steering wheel. The carpeted section is quite stiff to remove. Then the heating ducting to the door has to be removed. It is then possible to reach up and release the clips by hand.

I have not tried removing the wood trim route. It seems quite delicate and is very expensive.

What clips? As far as I know there are no clips, the cluster is held in place by being a very tight fit. The pulling tools are just that, for pulling the cluster. They hook into grooves moulded in the side of the cluster case, they don't dissengage any clips.

On my w220 2003 there are two slots bottom left and right where radio removal keys are inserted. They are supposed to push in some sprung clips that hold the cluster in postion.

It is a different design to some mercedes that use a friction fit and a hooked tool to remove

Hi all.
One of my customers was wondering about fitting a head unit to her W220 S270. It only came with cassette which is moulded into the upper part of the centre console, but there is a free DIN slot just below.

I removed the 2 torx screws under the ash tray, and also the 2 torx screws holding the DIN slot in, but still the 'wooded trim' will not budge.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Jason.

Did your customner decide to fit the new head unit? If so I'd be interested in her old Audio 10 radio cassette if she wishes to sell.

Keith,

The old audio cassette unit wouldnt be removed otherwise you would be left with holes in the dash. The head unit fits in the middle compartment using a fascia adapter.

I have recently fitted a double din display in my W220.

I have an audio 10 unit available and the CD unit for the trunk aswell.

Jason,

When i removed the old unit I found you might need to remove the ashtray and push it out from behind the audio unit.

Also the adaptors cost about £40 for the single DIN, if she has the dash with the closing wood compartment there might not be enough clearance for it to close - hence why I went for the new dash surround and a double din unit.
