W221 Blinds

I've seen the button without the blind before in a CL.

It does nothing when pressed obviously.

I can understand the button without the blind because the star/asterisk is used by German auto-manufacturers to represent a programmable button.

My CL500 has the button marked "*" in the book as a favourite button you can select what the button does in command, select the fav button in command and it will give you a list to choose from to assign the button , if you have a blind it will be on the list. I think you have a blind as it has the pic, go in though command settings it should be listed.

I have the Blind Button on my CL which doesn't have a blind. I have a Blind on my S-Class (W221) and when I first drove the CL I pressed the button assuming the Rear blind would appear, nothing. Like you I thought it had jammed

Ok, just checked it through, no option for a blind in the '*' favourite button menu, no visible signs of a blind installed, but yet the button exists.

So, no blind.... I am assuming it was cheaper for MB to install standard set of buttons whether the option is installed or not. Poor show really by MB on a car with such a high new retail price.

Thanks for all your input, really helped to get to the bottom of this easily.

Can you upload a picture of your rear deck - a wide angle that would show the brake light and whatever is around it?

You don't have one - it would be in the gap between the third brake light and the line where speaker grilles panel starts.

Yep, just as I thought... again though, poor from MB to install a button for one... they seem to take the time tom remove other buttons if you don't have the feature, just not that one.

Maybe a previous owner had a problem with the button stack and replaced it with a second hand one that had the blind button in it? Just a possible reason why it might be there!

For vehicles without the rear blind installed, depressing that button instead gives a gentle massage to Ego of the Mercedes Benz driver.

Sounds a bit odd to me. My CL has a blind but my button in that exact same spot in the centre console is just a star/asterisk. I would have thought if you didn't have the blind you would just get that rather than an actual picture of the rear blind.

They are prone to getting jammed though so if you get a picture of your rear deck it will be easy for someone to tell if it's tucked in there.
My unederstanding is pre-facelift (to 2009) W221's had the asterix (cusomisable button) on the left bottm end of the conole. With facelift the blind button occupies that position, menwile the aterix button has move to bottom right.
