Hi folks.

Better half's B180 CDI is now 5 years old and according to the service booklet the timing belt change interval is said to be 5yrs/100k miles. I've contacted two main dealers and they both say its not scheduled for now. One said that in ECE??? countries its 10 years. What's an ECE country? Obviously I'd rather be sure about this so is there anyone on here who can advise please?
Any help appreciated
Steve

Ok, just as an update and for any other owners with a 607 engined MB.
MB main dealer was saying 10 years/120K but service handbook says 5 years/62K.
One local specialist didn't want the job and referred me to main dealer, another who was very helpful, from Manchester would do it but said the interval was my decision as the car has only done 30K
I spoke to Shane and Will from MBtech, Warrington and they advised to get it done as per handbook. I agree as the consequences of timing belt failure etc etc. MB also told them the interval was 10 years/120K
I've booked with MBtech to sort it.

It is not impossible that there was a later technical bulleting and the the service schedule for the time belt has been changed from 5 years to 10 years? You will need access to WIS to find-out... but either way no harm in getting it done at the 5-year interval, especially given the potentially-terminal consequences of a timing belt failure. .

Had a look in my copy of WIS for a W246 with a 607 engine.

The overview service sheets state 10 yrs/200,000km for cars in countries with low dust levels and 5 yrs/100,000km for cars in countries with high dust levels. There is a 3rd service sheet (AP.00-P-1228TL), marked 'not country specific' which has the 5 yr/100,000 km interval.

Does seem to be a few things replaced on a timing belt change, including water pump, though.

I went ahead and had the W246 timing belt replaced at 5 years. They replace the water pump and associated rollers so peace of mind. If we still have the car in 5 years time may gamble not to have it done. Probably wont have it in 10 years. Also had the transmission fluid and filters done. Top marks for MBtech in Warrington for their great service and the opportunity to drive a Smart fortwo courtesy car. I'll stick with me S211.
