As I understand it the lubricant for the compressor is in with the gas, so if it's allowed to run for any length of time with no/low gas it will be toast. I took my Vito to a local aircon specialist and they found a slow leak in the condenser (pretty common). Hope you manage to get yours sorted OK ... access to most things is difficult with the V6, I know you have to take the engine out to get the exhaust manifolds off!

Only did this on my 651 Viano. A bit awkward, but didn't need remove any rads, but the steering reservoir was in the way.
In March 22 I fitted a Nissens 890 for less than £250.

that 890 a compressor presumably ? how are you getting on with the 651 ? you had an emissions saga at one time i keep thinking of a later vito / viano to get better fuel consumption and a better ride than the 07 639 120cdi on 18's but i have a lot of kit fitted as a dayvan / hob sink fridge unit ( just 12v jobbie ) 2kw diesel heater, sunroof ( central ) and curtains all round i do worry about that 651 aint a patch on the reliable 646 and of course that v6 is so smooth but thirsty as f***k quite a bit of roadnoise at motorway speeds as well thats irritating as i turn the stereo up and she then turns it down grrrrrr thinkingg of a vito taxi then she can go in the back LOL
best regards
Boyd
