Wanted CLS 55 AMG

Went to see another today - black with beige interior, 60k miles, £14k. Keyless-go, sunroof, electric boot, HK audio, Dynamic seats, 18" 5 spokes and COMAND DVD SatNav. Good condition with new brakes all round and quite fresh tyres. Drove well.

Very tempted. On the downside, I really am not a huge fan of the beige interior! Some questions:

1) The electric boot - it opens from the key and closes with a button on the boot. Is there meant to be an internal button to close it? I couldn't find one!

2) It has no phone in it and nothing I could find to indicate Bluetooth. The COMAND menus showed Tel and it "looked" for one and didn't find one. Just default settings and it's not present?

3) Didn't have a couple of CDs to check with, but since the satnav DVD is in the boot, does the single slot in the front (nothing in glove box) mean that it's just single disc, or do they stack multiple inside one at a time?

4) Spare tyre - I could swear the last one I saw had an inflated space saver in the boot. This one had an empty compartment under the boot floor with no tyre; just a gel repair bottle and electric emergency pump. Is that normal?

5) Front Parktronic - still haven't figured out if it's standard equipment or not! I know the rears are.

I'm not an expert but:

1) The electric boot - it opens from the key and closes with a button on the boot. Is there meant to be an internal button to close it? I couldn't find one!

I don't think you will find one - I think it is to avoid unattended boot shuts which may cause injury!

2) It has no phone in it and nothing I could find to indicate Bluetooth. The COMAND menus showed Tel and it "looked" for one and didn't find one. Just default settings and it's not present?

My E55K is the same and has no telephone pre-wiring.

If it is like the E, the slot above the nav unit is the DVD unit and underneath the nav unit is a silver button, which when pressed, opens up a section which has a CD multichanger in it.

4) Spare tyre - I could swear the last one I saw had an inflated space saver in the boot. This one had an empty compartment under the boot floor with no tyre; just a gel repair bottle and electric emergency pump. Is that normal?

I think you could just opt for tyre weld. I prefer a spare myself.

5) Front Parktronic - still haven't figured out if it's standard equipment or not! I know the rears are.

Parktronic (all of them) are an option on the E55K - I imagine the CLS is the same

Press the Sliver trim piece below the COMAND and it will open up a hidden motorised CD Changer.

The old fashioned Phone connector is inside the central armrest if it was optioned, boot can only be closed manually.

Boot can be opened and closed using the button in the driver's door pocket.

That's what I thought I saw in another one a month or so back! Certainly couldn't find it today on the door. Just blind or an option with two options!? :dk:

Power boot lid was an option

So I have a 60k miles one with an interior colour that's "ok" (ish!!) vs. a 35k miles one with black and black (much better!). There's a £6.5k difference in price though, which is stupid money just for 25k less miles. They both have sunroofs, HK audio, Parktronic and keyless-go.

Differences - 60k one has dynamic, 18", electric boot. 35k one has cooled seats, 19", 6 disc changer, Bluetooth.

It's theoretically possible I could knock the 35k one down £4.5k in price (if the seller finally sees common sense after months at a hugely optimistic price!), but that's still £2k more for a nicer colour with cooled seats and bigger wheels.

Choices choices .. am I being mad!? I wish MB had some better style in those days - the grey and beige interiors just don't look nice to me compared to black or cream (or any other luxury car cabin for that matter!).

Wait until the "right" one appears for sale on the market....

Just looked up the VIN data sheet on the car I looked at with no apparent phone:

386
UNIVERSAL TELEPHONY PACKAGE

Any idea what that means then!?

Some other odd entries:

885 HIGHTEN THEFT PROTECTION
What's that!?

616 BI-XENON HEADLICHT W.ACTVIE CURVELIGHT LEFT-DRIVE
Is "Active curvelight" different to normal xenons?

Regarding my earlier post on CD capacity, all it says is:
810 PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM
819 CD CHANGER
860 TV-TUNER ANALOG

885 - when locked you'll see a little trap door open in the roof and an internal movement sensor drops down, takes a few seconds.

616 - the headlights swivel in the direction of travel, upgraded cornering lamps in effect.

Thanks WN .. I was sure you were taking the proverbial when you mentioned a little trap door until I finally found this:

Is that similar to what the CLS option would be?

Another question - why do so many CLS55s on the market have new disks and pads .. and often callipers just before sale?

It appears some do KHz! I've seen it on two datasheets now.

One more question .. I forgot the guy mentioned "Ambient lighting" while we were in the office, but I never looked and it's not in the datasheet (at least not called that!). Any ideas how it gets turned on? Is it a steering wheel menu option? Was he mistaken if it's not on the datasheet?

Because the alloy Brembo calipers corrode, and the pads become siezed. This causes corrosion on the discs - mainly on the inside face - as the pads don't move freely. Common issue and affects other cars with similar brakes - such as Porsche.

It's an adjustment on one of the steering wheel menus, 1-5 in light intensity IIRC, you get a glow from the dome lights etc and some other areas/switchgear.

You forget about most of these options once you've got one. There's just so many buttons and menus etc!

One of my favourite options on these cars for me has to be Keyless go. I hate having to mess about with keys on normal cars now! :o

Lol... Yup, that's the one!

Regarding discs and pads, because if driven as designed, they are hard on brakes.

Thought the AMGs didn't have the corning headlights?

They don't have the fog lamp based cornering lights, due to the AMG bumper design. The dipped beam 'pod' turns within the headlamp unit. Very important to have the function correctly set up via STAR or you potentially dazzle other drivers. Often gets disabled.
