Warning - card fraud after buying a car stereo

sometimes i do not even trust the banks and their staff as well.
Remember the ones that stole man city football players accounts and sold the details to organised criminals?
A bank can not vouch for every staff being honest so i always look after my own.

Can I stay over your place? I wanna check under your matresses :D

Now that you have the address and details of the person who stole the details and attempted to commit fraud you no longer have a case in court to prosecute.

The privacy act prohibits retailers from giving out the address of 3rd party details (such as yours and his) which in effect destroys your court case.

So you can do as you like. It is all for nothing now.

I use a debit card too.better for me as the account is always empty.
only when i need to make a purchase do i fill it in with money.
make the purchase and it goes empty again.
anythief will only get a max of 1p

Or you get hit with bank charges for going overdrawn......

spot on exactly. three accounts actually.
has to do with the insurance over £30000 stuff.
i do not want to lose any money if the bank goes bust

The number of accounts will not help you - it is based on monies invested within an institution and their banking liscence not the number of accounts..... also be wary if two banks (via a take over / merger) are run through one liscence you have no extra protection if you split your monies between them...well worth checking out if you are worried about a major bank going bust.....but in reality no govt is ever going to let it happen..

can't go overdrawn when there is no overdraft facility in the account.
see i do not spend money i do not have.

the accounts with money in them are not in the same bank anyway.
Only the debit card, and the one that i need to transfer money to it.

Not sure if Cahoot are still offering the service, but they used to provide a windows application that would generate a 'one time' card number, and you were able to set a limit for the use of that number against your account. That way you would be confident that your real credit card number would never be seen by anyone that you are purchasing from, and even if the number got out, it had a limit set by yourself. Also very useful for tracking where the fraud occurred.

I've been skimmed more times that I care to remember, but it's never cost me a cent.

We have an online shop set up where we never see the card details, HSBC secure epayments takes all the info inc the verified by Visa/ mastercard secure info and tells us if it's approved or if there is a problem a brief description of it.

This week we have had 4 attempts to purchase stuff with 2 different names with the same delivery address which flags up as 'known to be a problem as involved in fraud previously' kind of thing. These have been big orders and as we sell Smart parts & accessories it's quite a small market!

This has saved us such headaches and from chargebacks that it's worth it! But we have people who don't like being transfered away from our site to HSBC to put the details i even though it's much safer than giving us their details!

that is a good idea.
some people are just too impatient as well.
some are actually supporting this oyster style wave and pay card ,as it takes too long to put in your pin.
Would take much longer to clear your name if you are involved in ID fraud

Yeah... I got some bumpf on that from HSBC last week. It's only trial in central london & only for purchases upto £5 or £10 and it can only be used like that for 5 purchases then you need to do a pin transaction.

I don't know how it will take off but I can imagine many people will like it!

I rang up the store where the fraud was attempted and the manager rang me back. He only gave out the details that were held in 'my account' that was set up in my name! Surely I'm entitled to find out what details are held by the shop in my name under the 1984 data protection act regardless of the fraud or not

So, how did he get your phone number?

I left it for the manager so that he could call me back. They did write to me as well which was very good of them.
