Noticed today the car runs at an indicated 50 degrees! If I sit in traffic it will rise to 70's but as soon as I get going again it drops back down. I think it's correct as the heating isn't that strong ( until you get stuck in traffic)

Any ideas? Common issue on the bmw diesel is faulty thermostat, sticks open and you get the same issue. Is this likely to be the issue here? If so how hard of a job is it to change?

+1 :thumb:

once replaced, as well as improved heating, you will get a far better mpg -my son changed his thermostat on a w211 e320 cdi - spec for that was 92.5C - was running below 80C b4 change

Quick search on Google seems to point towards the thermostat, apparently it's a common issue

Any idea on the labour times i should expect to be quoted?

any garage should be able to change it - simple diy job too - easy peasy job - doesnt have to be merc specialist

If anyone quotes more than half an hour, they're having a laugh. I did my own in a very comfortable half-hour. It's not a hard job on the OM646 in the E, can't imagine it's much different in the C. You need an E10 Torx socket with an extension bar and make sure you don't drop the bolts.

My temps went from 70-80°C depending on driving to a rock-steady 90°C.

Don't take it to Mercedes Coventry who first af all informed me that it was the water temperature sensor(!), and let me have it back running at 60 degrees, then told me "These engines are supposed to run at 60" when I returned.

Absolutely shocking diagnosis and service :fail

You may want to drain the coolant while you are at it and replace it with the long-life (15 years) coolant of later mercs.

That's good news. It's going to have a full 4 wheel alignment done at a place in Melton Mowbray this week, asked for a quote and awaiting a call back

Local garage changed the thermostat on my S203 (2001 C270Cdi) for £40 CIH, I supplied the replacement thermostat.

Local garage have referred to autodata and it says 3.2 hours to change the thermostat!

Any recommendations on a place to get it done for less?
