1993 Mercedes E300 diesel estate
I've just upgraded my W124 diesel estate for the multi-valve engined version.

It's common for W124's to rust where the front bumper meets the wheel arch. I was wondering if anybody had waxoiled their car to protect this area and, if so, how much it costs. Plus, does it work?

I've had a look in yellow pages and there isn't a category this service could fit in. So, where would be the best place to look - bodyshops/general garages???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Kevin

Try looking under car accessories in Yellow pages, sometimes falls in that sort of area. Waxoyl is sold by most car spares shops in spraycans or the 5 litre drums for use on your own spray equipment. If its only a small area, buy the spray cans and do it yourself. I bought about three cans several years ago to do my MGB after I had replaced the cills and various other bit and pieces. Did most of the car with three cans

I know people that have tried the cans and said it goes everywhere and to do it properly you need to get the car on a ramp and take the wheels off.

I don't have these facilities. That's why I was looking into getting someone to do it for me.

Someone also said it's best to have the underside of the car steam cleaned first??

Any thoughts on this??

If the car isn't already rusty there then remove each front wheel and pull out the plastic liner. It's the liner rubbing through teh paint that causes the rust.

Paint the inner wing, brush on some waxoyl and rifit the liner. No garage or ramp required, just a decent jack and axle stand. Do one side at a time if you can't jack the whole front up.

If you really need the car done then these are close for you.

Thanks for that Dieselman.

Re: Before and After.

It looks as though he knows he stuff, but it's a bit pricey for me.

The problem I have doing it at home is my drive is on a slope and not safe for jacking up. Plus, the road outside the house isn't suitable because, being a modern estate, it's fairly narrow and I would probably obstruct traffic.

Spoke to a couple of places yesterday that advestised body repairs and rust prevention and there's a place in Bath that'll remove the wheels and liner in the arch and then waxoyl both the front wings for £60-70 + vat. The whole underneath of the car would be £180 + vat.

I didn't think that was too bad. Would it be enough to only do the wings as that's where the rust problem seems to occur on the W124's??

Cheers,

Kevin

IMO if your 124 is free of rust now, do the whole lot - costs about £150-200.
Mine was never treated (with anything, including respect!), and now the jacking points are gones, the wings are like lacework, and there are holes you could stick a hand through elsewhere. I've no complaint - i bought it as a cheap heap, and it'll probably be in the crusher pile in 4 months, when the MoT runs out.
But Waxoyl (or better, Dinitrol) works very well. have all the box sections done, and tthe doors, and the back panel - in fact everywhere the guy can fit his lance......

Thanks for that. :)

Does anyone know how long does the waxoyl last?

As long as you want it to.
The anti-corrosive agents gradually break down but the wax is forever.

Or until you have some bodywork done. The oven tends to melt the waxoyl leaving a nice sticky mess. It's particularly frustrating if you have waxoyled inside your doors as it makes a lovely mess on the sill covers.
