Ways to sell SL

Just emailed them so will sort out tomorrow. Your right about the speed, a month or 2 perhaps but the car will not really be used much now. As with all things (especially the SL roof), they dont like being left unused

Hi Simon,

Trust me when I say that very few people will go near an SL thats got a towabr on it... get it removed and re do the pics.

Simon, I've just checked my copy of Mercedes Enthusiast. It's £12 to advertise including a colour photo with a maximum of 30 words. Additional words are 25 pence / word.

It would be useful to get lots of pictures and a good description onto the internet and put a link to it in the advert or at the very least put something like the following text: for more pictures / detail email [email protected]

If you don't need to tow anything in the forseable future it may be worth paying the £50 to have the towbar removed and then take some new pictures.

Hope that helps...

Thanks to everyone for their comments on my SL which is for sale in the classified section. Following my post yesterday asking for further advice I was very down last night when I thought the car was being pulled apart on the forum.(mistakenly thought)

I do see what most of you are saying, I guess because I don't want to sell and am forced to following a sudden family event, I am over worried. (the money has to buy a 4 seater car ASAP)
I had just picked out pictures we had taken this year when I thought the car looked good.

I did think about re-taking the pictures to hide the removable towbar but I wouldn't feel I was being wholly honest. So, I called in at our local towbar place, they will remove for £50. So I have decided I will arange for that to be done if the buyer requests it, at my cost.

As regard to what is in the background, I can also see that it may have looked a little more professional if I'd posed the car at a scenic spot. I may do just that this weekend so it will look all nice and pretty.

The comment about the paintwork is not an issue as any buyer will see the quality of the car at first hand, if I have lied, they will not buy. I can assure you, they car was clay barred and re-polished over winter. It could be improved of course with a machine polish but I never quite built up the nerve to attempt it. Elbow grease only I'm afraid.

As regard to history, I have just about every receipt from new, car serviced by main dealer until 68,000 then exclusively by Mercare in Plymouth. The book is full of stamps, none missing amd the receipts along side them with the parts detailed. Everything works perfectly but would take hours to list everything from the last 17 years. If you come to view, bring your reading glasses.

Thank you to everyone who has helped with advice

PS still don't have an answer to my original question about whether to advertise in Mercedes enthusiast

Regards

Simon

I was not trying to "put the boot in" as you said in your PM to me - but at least this post explains why you sent the PM in the first place. I am glad I did not send you a response straight away last night because it would have been equally rude and sarcastic.

ps dont bother with mercedes enthusiast, you have the market covered with PH and AT. If you do not get any calls and you have to sell then you just have to keep lowering the price by £250-500 a go - you will be surprised how well it works. Then you just have to go and negotiate hard on the new purchase.

As above, lose the towbar (I noticed it immediately when I looked at your 'for sale' yesterday) and take new pics.

I'd also query text like 'No expense spared' & 'maintained regardless of cost' when the car has been fitted with replica wheels. At the very least I'd suggest removing the word 'rare' when describing them (they're quite common on older SLs).

Assuming the rear seats are OEM I would also remove the 'upgraded' reference. Just state (and show) that the car has them.

Good luck with the sale - looks like a nice car.

I'd also do as others recommend and remove the towbar and take some new pics.

I'd list as a classified advert on ebay. most people will check ebay.

For the price, i would also list in ME. if you are not already a member of the mercedes club then join up and list your car in the Gazette and on the website.

The Mercedes-Benz Club

I feel ebay will be where it sells, and in my opinion, is the best venue to list it as you can put lots of nice self-hosted photos up, nice clear font etc etc. Create a very nice advert with some decent pics. Take the car out purposely to a nice setting to take several nice, clear photos.

list the whole spec

Ive just sold my 1994 SL300-24v with 70k on Autotrader.....took a long time to sell as I was asking a similar price to yours, but it has eventually gone.

No expense spared in terms of maintenance and upkeep and was an absolute beauty, but I found that R129 prices are at rock bottom at the moment and there are loads of cheap, nasty, multi owner cars out there that yours and mine had to compete with.

I think your sale will take some time, especially bearing in mind your location, far down in the south west....that unfortunatley will limit the amount of people coming to see it.

You may therefore have to be flexible on the price.

LOL. And you sold it to me! Hello!

I have to say it is in excellent condition - getting a few bits done to it now to make it perfect (no offence!). Afraid the plates didn't survive coming off though - will email you to make sure you've read the post...

It's coming happily back to life after being driven sparingly and doesn't seem to have thrown any major wobblies yet... Nor should it. And I agree, there are a lot of heaps out there and the values appear generally to have hit the bottom.

Cheers,

James
