Not been our week with the W124

Last week it developed a misfire, so because the plugs were probably past due being changed I replaced those, no better so I changed the leads and colil pack extenders. Again, no better and by now I realised that the loom had to be done, so the best part of £600 worth of wires and the car's running almost back to normal, except last night we noticed the centre box of the exhaust was blowing. First glance suggested it would just be a quick spot of welding as it looked like a clean break (I suspected Annie had caught it on a speed ramp at work) but a close inspection revealed the whole back section of the box was knackered. So, it's in to Kwik Fit tomorrow for a new centre box.

It's cost us far more than we wanted to spend this week but some quick thinking and hard bargaining on the phone has picked up some pretty healthy discounts. Hopefully nothing else is going to break for the in the near future.

On the plus side, it's really the first time this car has cost us any money other than routine maintenance

You have my sympathy. My recent routine service has become a bit of a harbinger of doom, although I had an inkling that things were afoot with the undercarriage.. At least the windows work :D

I'm also waiting for the original exhaust to throw the towel in - which will hopefully be no sooner than 2010.

It's not nice when you hear a major thing is going/has gone wrong with your beloved car.
Like you say, it's the first time you've had to spend a good wedge on her, though. I'm sure she'll repay you with many more years of faithful use with only routine servicing costs! It's worth the cost, if she'll be a long-term keeper.

I would have thought you would fit it yourself and save some dosh for a better part.

we "negotiated" with Kwik-Fit. A bit of quick (kwik) thinking on the phone resulted in them giving us a price to supply and fit which was only £20 more than buying one and fitting it myself :)

I'm a bit too busy this week to spend any more time working on it and in my experience, without proper ramps exhausts can be a right pain.

If it lasts a couple of years I'll be happy because the rest of the system will probably need replacing by then
