What’s it worth? High mile E55 AMG

Sounds a very good example indeed…..hope you don’t mind me linking to an older thread.

Price?

Thanks for the comments, overall very happy with it, I haven't spotted anything too alarming yet.

I've not been through the full history but here is the first 100k miles:

It seems to have had all the major items serviced apart from the diff, I can see any record of a fluid change etc.

Thanks!

Nice looking car, and with all of that history.... i would have taken a punt! Congrats on your purchase, Did you barter on price at all ?

That looks nice in its classy, classic retro way.

I wonder what the s&m costs total over its lifetime
I wonder what the fuel bill totals...!

Interesting thoughts, but depreciation is usually the biggest cost of motoring. In this relatively extreme example mileage wise I don’t think there’s a lot on it even compared to the fuel costs on a 5.4 supercharged V8.

230k miles @ 20mpg is 11.5k gallons, 52325 litres. Say at £1.30 a litre average would be around £68k. I think that’s about 30p/mile? These are just guesstimates on cost/mpg but I should think you get the idea.

I bought a low mileage E-class AMG (albeit a 212) that had cost the previous owner a similar amount in depreciation alone. IIRC £61k in 11k miles, think it worked out over £5/mile!

Again servicing/repair costs can be expensive but that E-class has effectively depreciated next to nothing in the last 100k miles. Free motoring once you remove the maintenance costs and of course all cars would need stuff like brakes/tyres/service items and often other stuff over that period.

It’s a good example of bucking the trend. Whilst people have been spending £40/50/60K+ on newer boring cars that are supposedly cheaper too run (better mpg and lower road tax etc) someone’s been rolling round in a 5.4 V8.

People lose £5k a year in depreciation or happily spend £500/600/700 a month in lease/finance payments but worry about £150 to fill the tank or a £1500 garage bill. Madness! :)

Really like this car, and I will admit, I am a little green eyed over it. Looks like a great buy and I wish you all the best with it. I have looked at E55's since reading this thread (even though I neither need, nor in truth, can afford another old Merc!). My want is strong!!

Also really like this sentiment:

"People lose £5k a year in depreciation or happily spend £500/600/700 a month in lease/finance payments but worry about £150 to fill the tank or a £1500 garage bill. Madness! :)"

100% agree, I have 3 old bangers now (2004 SLK350, a 2008 ML 320 and a 2009 S320). None are worth what I have spent on them (buying, fixing, maintaining), all will require more spend over time. But, I'm not paying a lease fee or company car tax and most importantly I drive something different and interesting.

The S class at some stage will have to go the distance as ongoing cost vs. value just doesn't stack up, and when it does I suspect I'll get 2-3k if I'm lucky. At which point, it will have cost me almost double that to maintain and repair (air suspension compressor, alternator, battery, bottom arms and amplifiers etc hurt ones bank account!) But, for that c. 5k I have already had 18 months of driving the single most favourite car I have ever owned/driven. And not paid a penny in company car tax! I'm at least financially even probably (rose tinted specs firmly on) and I've had something that's made me smile every time I drive it (albeit, an emotion tempered with the times it's not started or thrown a warning light when using it 🤣)

I too am in exactly the same thought pattern as "People lose £5k a year in depreciation or happily spend £500/600/700 a month in lease/finance payments but worry about £150 to fill the tank or a £1500 garage bill. Madness! :)" Never understood it....
Not to mention that the car has been saved from lord knows what fate, and surely it is far better for the environment to 'recycle' and old vehicle rather than keep buyer a new one ( which seems to me madness, also the amount of plastic used in new cars is shocking ) Get some class, recycle and enjoy !!!

Ah, I see. Didn't realise you meant your one. ;)

I'm less curious now as it is a saloon and I needed the Estate. I'm more than happy with my new steed and I think it will be with me for many many years. Just been to Brighton and back for work. Even horrible traffic back with a 3 hour return journey it was a joy and a pleasure to be in.

I'm surprised nobody has enquired or is looking at yours though as seems a great example there.
👍
I've not advertised it yet.
I'd hate for it to be bought locally and then see it being treated badly, ragged around, and poorly modded.
Motorway seem to think it's worth 5
figures to them.
After 12 years ownership, it's hard to let the old girl go but I'm into river cruising now that I'm old, and, to roughly quote a film, I'm going to need a bigger boat 🚢

Having watched older AMGs for about a year I'd say rough rule of thumb for any >15 year old mid sized AMG (C, E, CLS, CLK, etc) is mainly mileage, service history and condition based:
<40k miles, £12k+
<70k, £10k+
<100k, £7-12k
100-150k, £6-10k
150-200k, £5-8k
200k+, very little, it is tiny tiny number of people willing to risk several k on one of these
Advertised prices,

achieved prices, or

"advertised but still didn't actually sell" prices?

Hard to say for sure but these are my sold prices. Eg, there is c55 on ebay, been on there for about 4 months at £10k, with some cobblers about that's the absolute minimum, but it's done well over 150k miles, and people start to get nervous at those miles. I've just had a quick look and it's down to 9k, he'll probably take 7k to finally sell, 8k if he's lucky...

So, is that prices that you've sold for?

or that you've seen other people advertise vehicles for, but that you don't know if they were sold, negotiated, or just passed on through the trade?

I'm just emphasising that there isn't reliable data around about what vehicles actually get sold for.

The more you hang around "classic car owners" the more you discover that long time owners often tried to sell several times, at optimistic prices, but never actually got the thing away, so they just kept it.

Tose values were for the OP's benefit - they're not reliable, but pretty realistic imho. They're what I've seen as the 'no offers thanks, it's a firm 10k or walk away' price goes down a couple of grand before the the autotrader/ebay ad ends (and some of those might decide not to sell!) The C55 estate on ebay has been there months. It was over 10k, then 10k, and now 9k, it'll be 8k next then probably sell for a bit less as the mileage is just too high... Unless he gets lucky and a bloke with a 9k budget looking for an amg in the local area happens to materialise; then he's quids in.

Will has put it very well here. My thought was that even if the E55 disappeared tomorrow morning I will have 'lost' less than the Defender this year.

Just for anyone reading this thinking that buying a high mileage 'cheap' E55 is a great idea, a dose of reality! I would not recommend this to anyone who doesn't like carrying out repairs themselves. This was at a lower budget for a reason! In my opinion the examples at twice the price actually represent better value for money provided they're well sorted.

The dash says no malfunctions however I thought it would be interesting to plug in the scanner:
  • Front right parking sensor
  • Oil cooler fan relay fauly
  • Drivers headrest motor
  • Low voltage that did clear
A good result overall, I was expecting more. Mechanically I got a better look today in the garage and can see the following will need attention, front left brake pipe, front left arch liner, supercharger pulley missing end cap. As you can see, some potentially big bills coming for someone at a garage!

I also noticed it has lowering links and pipercross filters which I'm not sure will stay. Overall very happy with it and gives me plenty to get stuck into!

Some pictures:

No malfunctions for now!

I noticed a small bit of water in the boot which turned out to be a bad seal around the tray, stripped all down and resealed which will hopefully solve that.

Thanks for all the comments & interest!

Agree with absolutely everything said, especially depreciation as the biggest bill for most but somehow forgotten. Love the E55 and the Landy! Great buys.

Actually watching this on eBay, love the colour and interior but would probably have still gone down the route I did!

^ +1 I Agree. but 164k miles and £12k asking price!
Find another one, though.
