Edit: and yes 320 means 3.2 and 180 means 1.8 although in newer cars some badged 1.8's have 2l engines????
And modern 320s are 3 litre.Clear as mud.

Really? Normally 2 litre, 1.8 or 2.2.
A 3 litre 3 series would normally be a 330.

that is for a BMW. he is talking about a merc and a
bmw 335 is also a 3 litre but biturbo
while a 330 is 3 litre normal aspirated
the s500 is a 5.5v8, the s600 is a 5.5v12 biturbo
the s63 6.3v8. the s65 6.0v12 biturbo, the s55 is a 5.5v8 charged

A sprinter 311cdi is 3ton 110hp
814 truck is 7.5ton 140hp
Actros 2425 would be 24ton 250hp
And so on.......

thats because BMW never used turbos so had to accomodate the new biturbo petrol
. Lets start on Porsche, why is my old mans 911 a 993 and not just a 911. Why does it then go to 996, then 997. Clearly its not the year of design involved (Boxster is 987.)
So your Porsche, is it a 996 or a 911.
