What does E320 mean?

Or E180 for that matter...

Does it mean (E320) 3.2l? If so, what is the '0' for?

Erm, not sure, just "is" like that, might be too similar to BMW's method of naming aswell. Someone might have a better answer than me!

Edit: and yes 320 means 3.2 and 180 means 1.8 although in newer cars some badged 1.8's have 2l engines????

And modern 320s are 3 litre. Clear as mud.

e320 means e -class. 3.0l V6 or 3.2 straight six depends on year.
although 300E meant 3.0 fuel injection.
confusing or what.

C180 used to be compact class 1.8 l
now c180k. c200k and c230k are all 1.8 litres with bigger chargers

bmw 335 is also a 3 litre but biturbo
while a 330 is 3 litre normal aspirated

the s500 is a 5.5v8, the s600 is a 5.5v12 biturbo
the s63 6.3v8. the s65 6.0v12 biturbo, the s55 is a 5.5v8 charged

even the e280cdi is 3.0litres as well and c280 is 3.0l, c200cdi and c220 cdi are both 2.2l. the old e240 was a 2.6 v6. i think it is the green guilt, as the s500 is called 550 in the US as it is 5.5litres

The A160, A180 & A200 Cdi are all 2.0 litres....

ML420 Cdi is in fact a 4.0 litres....

S63 is actually 6.2 litres. Really maddening.

What gets me is the AMG cars have only 2 digits i.e. E55 (actually 5.4litres) and C32 but normal MB is 3 digits, i.e. ML350 or R320cdi.

BMW's system is also bizarre. A 523i is a 2.5 litre but a 525i is now a detuned 3.0i. Guess what a 530i is, a fully fat 3.0i. (5 being a 5 series )

However other non core BMW models are badged different. My X5 was just badged 4.4i on the side but it was never a X544

325d,330d,335d all 3.0 d turbo but all have single turbo except 335d with biturbo

I thought it had something do with engine size/power. Not the mass of the thing.

So my E class would be 214cdi (2 ton 140bhp). Makes good sense that.

would you know about the coaches? i know they are all made in brazil but i still recall numbers like 0362,0364,0303,0371,0330, 0400

Ah, but did you know a E46 320i was actually a 2.2 I6 and a 323i was a 2.5I6.

There hasn't been a good nomenclature system there for ages. They should have called the 335i the 330Ti. But that wouldn't in buyers minds justified the extra premium. The 35i part implies it has the power of a 3.5litre.

The same goes with the 330d and 335d cars.

The X6 is a cracker, the 4.4i twin turbo is actually badged X50drive or something to imply its the power of an n/a 5.0i V8. (which it is).

they are running out of numbers hence the 997, mine is a 996 as is referred to in the service book but it is still a 911, and i think the 993 is still the best looking of the lot.


The 911 is the car, and 993/997 is the model designation.
