What does the engine number tell me?

My sons engine number on his merc is 64896130063073

Could someone explain what this string of numbers mean please

The first 3 digits denote the engine code: om648

v6, 3 litres...the last 6 is the serial number.

961 makes it a 320cdi.

it's an inline 6 actually - just wondered if part of the number indicated if it was a dpf or non dpf version or does that info come fom the VIN numbe or data card
