What happened next?

Maybe the warning bulb was out too..........
.

Could be ........ I was surprised on some of my recent visits with the police that they no longer have the full instrument panel check as part of the starting drill , as was taught when I did my advanced training in the late '70s , and now just 'assume' they have a 'normal' panel !!!!!!!!

What did happen - I reckon you got booked. The fact that his brake light also didn't work was immaterial.

What should have happened - A verbal warning to get it fixed ASAP.

What could have happened - You told him his light wasn't working either and you both had a chuckle and went on your ways.

What could have happened 2 - He booked you for having faulty lighting AND for answering back.

What happened has already been mentioned. I apologised. Offered to fix it on the spot. He was taking out his FPN book when I offered to change his as well.
He accepted my offer. We had a laugh and I went on my way without FPN.

My lights had been operative when I started my journey. The malfunction came on about 2 miles into the journey but I decided to wait til I was next stopped,but... But it does beg the question who polices the police? I got off because he had a similar fault and saw the funny side. But can a member of the public report the police?

Its good that plod are bothering with this. I suspect they would have a field day in my locality, about 20% of cars seem to have one or more inoperative lights!

I felt some annoyance the other day when I was following a small MPV type vehicle towing a trailer : the trailer was showing no numberplate and I could not see the plate on the towcar ; none of the lights on the trailer were working ( trailer probably not plugged in ) ; only one of the three brake lights on the towcar was working . Any one of the above faults could be just about understood - all three together can only be negligent .

We were following a car the other day that had a different number plate on the trailer. Well that's one way to deal with speed cameras!

The most common infringement I see are cars with bicycles on the rear, covering the lights and number plates. Laziness or ignorance? Either way rather dangerous.
