What is a MAF?

Alright, I was the lad in class who afraid to ask any questions, but now I don't give a monkeys uncle. Read a lot about how they/it can effect the engine. My car started to drive like a pig today. When stationary it would hover between 5000 rpm and 10000rpm, but very erratic. Very slow acceleration too. Any answers please.
