What is an AIR injection pump???

During my Vauxhall Omega forum days, the advice from those in the know was to simply disconnect the pump if it became noisy rather than replace it.

I think these are noisey from the factory, they serve no usefull purpose so the best thing is to disconnect or remove it completely.

If this unit is the same one I think, then it is also known as an A.I.R pump Air injection reaction pump, it is quite widely fitted to cars from the 90's Vauxhalls had them routinely many others too.

The theory I was lead to understand is that from a stone cold start the air was produced to mix with the exhaust gasses pre-catalyst to form a gas that would bring the cat up to temp far faster and start working, hence.

It is a simple and crude system that lasted for several years, indeed I think you would be very hard pressed to find any EuroIV cars with it fitted.

The bearings on these pumps seem to whine and seize with some regularity. The Japanese just don't engineer these things for long life spans IMHO.

Funny you should say that, I've just replaced the Bosch unit on my wife's RX8 for that very reason, they are notorious for giving up the ghost after 5 years or so.

Although it seems to be now missing this 'cap' it seems to be working and before the loss of this 'cap' was not too noisy afterwards.

Just not too sure how to describe this part online to a MB parts site.

Don't know if this is going to help or not (I would say not though) but these are the best I could find for a 320CE without your VIN number.
Looking at them it seems to be far more complex than just a missing cap, unless I'm completely wrong with the part. It's also possible that this info is for USA cars.

If you want to try checking it yourself, here is the link Êàòàëîã çàï÷àñòåé Mercedes, ïîäáîð àâòîçàï÷àñòåé äëÿ Ìåðñåäåñ ïî àâòîêàòàëîãó.

On the face of it, it seems that the part no '149' Hose fits where the hole is but then it is not clear that it goes there, nor is is a 'Cap'.

My Vin no is WDB124662B976825

If anyone has a picture from their own pump it will help me find what I need.

Thanks

Unfortunately the site doesn't recognise your VIN number, not uncommon though. I tried Googling the airpump part number and it returned several results. Here are a couple of shots of a used pump, with what looks like the missing cap attached. Can't find the part number but hope the pics help.

There is a 0 missing after the 4.

I just took another look at the attached parts list. There are 2 #149's and 1st one says 'Hose' - 'Replacement' (Modified part). 2nd one says 'Cap' - 'Air Pump' and gives the number A1041400081

Check this link, German site, but part should be available from your local MB Dealer. http://wiki.mercedes-benz-classic.com/index.php/A1041400081/en

I checked with a UK MB dealer and the number you gave for the cap is correct and exists as a standalone part for about £30.00.

Thanks for that :)
