Genuine question here. I have 2 beautiful mercs I have to sell as need to pay for repairs on my 99 sl500. How much is MC5 6ENZ worth? Can’t put it on my beloved and not interested in comments about legality as we all see interesting plates all day and it’s what makes us British! I’m selling 2 Awsome mercs as need to downside for retirement and SL needs beauty treatment and would love new owner to have pleasure of this plate but at a proper price on one of them. Thoughts really appreciated. Have seen bad examples for £4K+ mer *** for example, not looking at that but interested in what proper merc owners feel its worth.

MC56 ENZ a bit limited as cannot go on anything newer than 2006, so car needs to be 13 years or older. I am guessing people in that market may prefer to spend the money keeping their car running than on a vanity plate, so my guess is £3-500 max.

Don’t you mean 2006 or newer? And are you suggesting a price of between £3 and £500?

Ah yes quite right, 2006 plate, not sure anyone with a newer car will want to make it look older though, private plates start at £250 not sure this would fetch a high premium but who knows, did you pay a large premium?

As a guide my brother paid £300 for a plate ending XKR for his XKR.

MC6 3ENZ is available on DVLA website for £250 including fees.

Ultimately though, it’s about finding a buyer willing to pay that bit more (isn’t it always!).

Where do you see it valued at?

Think we have the concept of these plates the wrong way round or am I reading it wrongly? You can make a new car look old but cannot make an old car look new.

Basically a 56 plate could go on any car from September 2006 onwards up to, and including, today's 19 registered cars. What it cannot do is to go on a pre 2006 car as this would make it appear newer than it is.

As for what they're worth, it's entirely dependant on what someone would want to pay really but I wouldn't be planning early retirement. :(

What 2 Mercedes cars are you selling? If you give details someone may be able to help. As already said the numberplate isn't worth much at all, I'm guessing maybe £50 - £75.

The SL must need a hell of a lot of work if you need to sell two other, much newer, cars to pay for it!

What you actually have is a registration number that sort of reads something a bit like a semi-literate abbreviation of 'Mercedes Benz' if it's illegally spaced, and you squint and pretend the numbers are letters. I don't think it will add anything to the value of either of your other two cars, and I suspect that 'proper merc owners' will feel the same.

"And are you suggesting a price of between £3 and £500?" Yes, he is, and I suspect it will be much nearer to £3 than £500.

Put it on eBay with no reserve; that will tell you how much it is actually 'worth'.

MC5 6ENZ is worth a £40 fine all day long.
If you have to mess with the spacing, it's poor.

leave the plates on the cars - by the time you have paid the rereg fees to put them on retention and acquired new plates you will probably by out of pocket

I think I see the MB's you are thinking of selling two C classes? You must have a lot of issues with the SL if the cost to repair is the value of a 2014 and 2016 C class!

Lots of people do put earlier plates onto their cars if the plate spells out a name , initials or has some other relevance - I see it every day on the roads .

I know I’m not alone , though , in disliking tatty misspaced or otherwise misrepresented characters .

The rules are an anomaly of the UK registration system where , since 1963 , the year of registration has been incorporated into the VRM .

Where it is a difference of just a few years and an older vehicle was still in production in the year of a newer plate , there is some small point - but for any potential buyer , the date of first registration is always shown on the V5 , so a pretty weak argument .

Where a plate is put on a car that could not possibly have been manufactured in the year of the plate then the rule is a pretty stupid one - again someone may have a cherished classic car , say from the 50’s or 60’s and want to put on a plate that spells their name - for example GAV 1N , which couldn’t go on something like a 1963 300SL , yet the owner of such a car might wish to do just that, and no one would be misled into thinking the car was made in 1975 , having by then been out of production 20+ years .

The consensus here seems to be that the OPs VRM isn’t worth a lot , but the true answer , as with everything, is it’s worth whatever he can get for it .

He could put it up on an Internet auction and see what it makes , or could try some dealers to see what they offer .

His two C Class cars , on the other hand , ought to be worth a bit , and leaving the plate on one of them may , or may not , make the car more attractive to a buyer .

I know that when I got my SL , it came with an ‘ageless’ Northern Irish VRM : I wasn’t at all fussed about it , and have thought of reverting back to a normal K prefix number , but it isn’t an issue either way to me so is still as is .

Wow, I'm selling the cars as I took one as part ex for a VW I had to get shot of, the other I bought with a dead engine, so sourced another engine and got my merc specialist to fit it and service it. They'll both be on the classified sections later. Love them both for different reasons but already have too many cars on the drive with all their associated costs.

Oh and need to front wings for the SL as the current ones are rotting from 20 years of use so gona replace them with new from Mercedes, also need new soft top and seats re-covered.

sounds like Trigger's Broom...

Yup but not bad for 20 years. Hood has never been replaced, seat bolsters looking a bit tatty as expected and at £500 each its not worth repairing the rust on the wings. Rest of car is still Awsome

I'm not sure I'd ever call an R129 SL500 awesome - if any R129, possibly the SL600 - but a good one is still a pretty decent car.

The cost of fixing a bad one could be awesome, though...

R129 last of the well built sl's so I've been told. And I would hardly call £500 per from wing awesome, the experience of one is though, in my opinion.

In years to come, you’d be grateful to be able to buy genuine front wings for an SL for £500 :)

I’ve always been pleased in general with the parts availability - and in general, pricing - for older Mercedes-Benz models
