Well, as they say, scarcity generates value. In other words: supply and demand.

This is really the entire theory behind the market value of cherished plates (or any other item traded on the free market, for that matter).

That and the increasingly vacuous "look at me" world we occupy...

That is a crucial factor, yes, but not the only one.

People often buy (or invest in) things that they personally have no interest in, simply because they think it's a good investment.

Or, in other words, because tgey believe someone else will want it at a furure time.

So things can became increasingly valuable simply because everyone thinks that they are good investment (= someone else wants it).

This is a self-fulfilling prophecy... and 'value' can spiral-up for no obvious reason.

This is more evident when prices of stocks and shares (that don't pay dividends) are inflated, but in essences applies to any tangible or non-tangible assest, including cherished plates.
