Genuine question here. I have 2 beautiful mercs I have to sell as need to pay for repairs on my 99 sl500. How much is MC5 6ENZ worth? Can’t put it on my beloved and not interested in comments about legality as we all see interesting plates all day and it’s what makes us British! I’m selling 2 Awsome mercs as need to downside for retirement and SL needs beauty treatment and would love new owner to have pleasure of this plate but at a proper price on one of them. Thoughts really appreciated. Have seen bad examples for £4K+ mer *** for example, not looking at that but interested in what proper merc owners feel its worth.

£5.

The problem with MC5 6ENZ is that there are similar plates that 'spell' Mercedes Benz (not very well). Even MC5 8ENZ isn't worth much and the MER *** valued at £4k is a dreamer. You can contact a company like Reg Transfers and ask them to value it, it will give you an idea although some their their plates do have (very) optimistic prices. Also remember a For Sale price isn't a Sold price. As mentioned you could sell the car with or without the plate and ask a premium with the number plate included. Either wat, I think you will be lucky to get £500 but I'm no expert.

I have to admit i'm astounded at the hatred for private plates which are meant as a bit of fun or individualism absolutely not what i expected, especially as one of the longest running threads on this site is what plate did you see lately. For those so against a bit of fun and individualism and offering useless comments on price I bought my daughter a plate which spelt out her name for £280, a very similar one was also available but I didn't need it for the same price. All of a sudden there are actresses on TV popping up with this name and the price of the other jumped to £1,400. Ridiculous non real world comments.

Was just after thoughts as the second hand car market is all but dead and bought the plate for the cars to stand out from the crowd. I've already dropped the price of both of them 3 times and they were the cheapest at the time in their ranges.

What you’ve got to realise is that people type things into their keyboard that they wouldn’t dream of saying face-to-face and remember this quote (told to me not long after I joined this forum) -

Opinions are like ****holes; everyone’s got one, the problem is when the ****holes have opinions!

Which comments are useless?

You asked for a view on the value of the registration - the majority of replies indicate it is has no real value as it nothing special or remarkable, supported by their reasoning. Ok some of that was a little direct but just because you don’t like the answers doesn’t mean everyone else is wrong.

By your own admission you paid only £280 for a name plate so that is your ballpark value right there.

Its only value is that it is unique- but so is every other registration mark.

Hatred is a bit strong, can't see any hatred on here at all, opinions may be different to yours as far as value is concerned (and you did ask for them after all) but not seen anyone hating!

For the record I have a private plate on my car, represents our initials and can make the car timeless until model changes step in so no hating from here!

The 2 cars you have are, to some people, merely utility tools - as nice as they are, again they are nothing special. And the market is very against diesel as the buyers just don't know what the future costs will be.

Value is obviously subjective but to me MC56 ENZ is meaningless so only has value if it has a personal connection for someone - I would guess someone was connecting it with a Merc if I saw it on a Merc but that's as close as it gets.

Any ***8ENZ plate is at least closer to a Merc to have a link but even then there must still be a personal connection for it to be worth anything.

My personal opinion is the £250 "value" plates are set purely as a minimum amount to be worthwhile for the DVLA to sell them and do not represent any kind of value (so are "throw away" really i.e. to be left on a car when you sell).

I'd be surprised if you got more than £250 for it but good luck nevertheless.

Trouble is even ___8 ENZ plates on DVLA are only £250 so excluding the £80 fee the absolute most the OP's plate is worth is £170. Most prospective buyers would rather buy the plate from DVLA than privately so to entice someone to buy the OP's plate it will need to be around £100 IMO.

Not hating personalised plates here, I have one on my SL, just being realistic.

In a world where abbreviation is king, twitter etc, how on earth can something that like looks like an abbreviation of Mercedes Benz be worthless, thats ridiculous. I'm not expecting thousands for the plate but know that good plates go for good amounts to those that want them. I have a private plate on three of my cars because it amuses me and some of them amuse others, at 52 I can also remember the plate when trying to pay for parking space. ITS A BIT OF FUN.

Let's face it, if you think a car number plate is a suitable canvas for you to express your creativity or individualism there's something wrong with you.

There is a significant difference:

With the rising demand to own a genuine (pre 1963) cherished number plate, prices increased year on year.
Many of these number plates have often been owned by families for decades or have a high sentimental value.
Since the introduction of number plates in the early 1900's, the desire to own a cherished number plate has grown steadily.
Cherished registrations can change hands for tens of thousands of pounds and some are worth more than the average house.

In today's terminology however, the term cherished number plate has been diluted somewhat by owners of prefix and current style car registrations who use the term to describe their private number plates.

A small % of these newer style registrations; private number plates, can also be worth a great deal of money, however the majority are simply a cheaper option.

I do like a good plate. In fact, I have 3 (including the wifes) and only 2 cars. Have even thought about a 4th :D
