Your engine is ***ked, allow me to take the car off your hands for scrap value.

Is the variable cam timing thing causing this?

It sounds like a knackered roller bearing to me. it could be the belt tensioner.

Thanks, we didn't really have time to investigate this evening, so I'll be having a poke around tomorrow.

This car is not for sale. Yet.

Sounds like the cam advance. Unplug it and see if it goes.

You were spot on.

What do you think is causing the noise?

The noise sounds as though it's coming from the inlet manifold?

Noise is likely echoing in the manifold. A stethoscope required me thinks - even an improvised one (long screwdriver pressed against ear with other end locating source of noise).

You probably need a new one. They are bolted to the end of the cam. They are mega money iirc.

the variable timing adjuster... but are you guys sure nothing else is adrift before you go spending money? Just checked, if it is that it retails at over £500 + VAT

Just been quoted £440+ vat for the part, so we will be investigating a bit more to make sure that's the actual problem.

When we unplugged the vvt, the car still went really fast?

We've timed it up using the AMG settings, so I'm presuming that's not the problem.

If you want it 100% then it needs it.

The car has been stood for well over a year, would this have contributed to its downfall?

I do know that it was working fine before the head was took off?

I thought you bought it at auction?

No, my pal bought it then set about stripping the head because of a very faint oil leak and then didn't/wouldn't find time to put it all back together again, it sat at his work place for about a year iirc.

So I offered him £800 and here we are...
