What on earth is an 'eagler wing seal leak' when it's at home? (OM642)

2x E350 CDI Sport W212s... for a bit
Hi,

My elderly dad is still servicing his 2010 E350 265bhp OM642 at MB with a service plan. On top of the service that they just did, they charged him £180 for an 'eagler wing seal leak'. Does anyone know what this is?

Looks like they changed the big turbo seal and the PCV seal, too, which I don't think was leaking (I changed it relatively recently and the car is barely used) - but they are only a couple of quid. However, I'm assuming that the eagler wing seal leak is something else and they did not charge an hour's labour to change these two orange seals...

I've googled for "eagler wing seal", A09840003 and 09840003 and nothing comes up.

Any one have any ideas?

Cheers,

Ed

Note: last year, they highlighted two leaks, one from the green turbo o-ring (which was fixed/replaced by an indie), and a very minor one from the oil sump (no gasket, just needed resealing...) - however they told us this AFTER they changed the oil, instead of before they filled the thing up again... morons. That would mean that you have to drain all the new oil again to reseal the sump...

Anyway, I assume this is not the sump? If they did the sump seal and charged an hours labour, they fair enough. It's too much, but it's MB and that's what you get. But if it were the sump seal, I'd imagine they'd just say that... ?

This will be interesting to find out, the only trouble with people touching your stuff they always, or mostly mess it up, no matter how much you pay.

I strongly suspect it is exactly what you think it is. I call it the batwing, but I’ve heard parts advisers call it eagles wing. I think its a typo of that. You’ll probably find a minimum labour charge of an hour has been applied. If they have replaced the fuel filter as part of the service it is theft. They had to remove it to do the filter. The joy of service plans. They’ll look for anything else they can charge you for in many cases...
Don’t get me started. I regularly survey my customers. Something regularly complained about is charges for small items. A sump washer, screenwash, a self tapping screw, a squirt of wd40, a dab of grease, a trim clip. When I was an apprentice these items were called workshop consumables, and were included within the workshop labour rate. Now everything is charged for.
Not in my shop! All consumables are included in the labour rate. For our regular service customers bulb replacements between services are free (excluding xenons), oil top ups are free and tyres checked for free too. At the end of the day this is something for the youngsters to do, and builds their relationship with the customers. They usually get a tip, so it’s all good in the end. Proper old fashioned service, and people love it. I thank the main dealers!

If it is an hours labour for changing those two orange seals I will hit the roof.

NB. They did the oil/filter, gearbox oil, brake fluid. No fuel filter so the batwing did not need to come off, no air filters or cabin filters. But still, it is a 5-10 min job to do those seals - and 2 of those are opening the bonnet and removing the engine cover - and I'm not a MB 'tech'. They could at least have charged for 1/2 hour.

Apparently they did not send a video this time, where the tech shows the issues.

The first line on the invoice appears to be the labour charge, also seems to be another £25+ vat added as well taking it to £171.96 with the VAT.

I believe the extra cash is for the covid pickup/cleaning etc which is mandatory...

Looking forward to a very calm and composed phone call with them (MB Epsom) tomorrow...
