It's a dressing applied to the outer tyre wall for cosmetic effect and perhaps to protect the rubber from environmental effects (eg UV damage) causing the rubber to dry out and crack.

I use the Meguiars spray. The trick is to spray it on and leave overnight before driving, or it will come off on your arches.

Autoglym tyre is brilliant mind you I Know someone who just uses black shoe polish and i must admit it always looks good

Many shoe polish contains Naptha and/or Turpentine.

Both are rubber solvents.......

Megs looks the best but personally I'd avoid it, it sprays all up the side of the car. .

Never had that problem, probably don't drive fast enough
