Totally ignorant about these things and the manual doesn't say either. But I noticed a leak from the cap, running down the side. Anyone else know?

Looks like a strut shock absorber to me ,but in the wrong place.
Have you got air suspension like citroens ? could be one of them but i really know nothing about MINI cars

One day another mini owner will discover the internet and then they could set up a forum! :D

Looks like the PAS reservoir , unscrew the cap and check the oil level.
On BMW's the little rubber O-ring at the base of the cap thread hardens with age and lets oil past. You can Get a new ring from the dealer for 80p.

It's the the horsepower holder.

Driving my mini for over 18 months now, I am convinced that it has *just* enough horsepower to fill that container.

I thought that the minis came with electronic pas?(High failure rate)
Would this still then have a PAS reservior?
If there is fluid leaking, it could well be an expansion bottle for the coolant? (coolant expands when it heats up) Bit strange being its so far from the rad and so near the Brake fluid reservoir? If it is the coolant bottle, beware opening it when warm or hot!

New MINIS ( R56) don't have the elecric power steering nor do diesel R50 models. It looks like MINI have reverted back to the tried and tested hydraulic pump method of power steering. Austin versions just used biceps!

Looking at the position of it it may be a tribute to the old SU Carburretor! :D

But it could also be a PAS reservoir like others have said.

Hairdresser dial ? ;)

Turn all the way to the left for maximum mincing .....

It a container for spare rubber bands.

Only to be use in emergency incase the one they use for the engine snaps......

he he

mystery solved

Thought I had better post the diagram from the link in my last post to clear things up.
