Whats your strategy for year 2030 / ban of ICE vehicles?

As for those who mentionrd the '6 o'clock kettle effect', i.e. 'when everyone comes back from work and charge their cars at home all the same time', true the grid won't be able to handle this, just as petrol stations are unable to handle it when everyone wants to brim their tanks all at once:

Luckily, the latter rarely happens, and former will likely never happen.

Our local supermarket has a few chargers, would seem sufficient, but that’s only because so few people have Electric Vehicles. 🤔

This is where I live.

Not sure where the chargers can go because if they’re fitted on the outside of the house a lead will have to be run over to where the cars are parked.View attachment 146549

It's doable. They'll likely put up charging bollards where the cars are parked now.

Something like this:

To run the cable, they will either bury it under the road or route it around.

Who owns the road? And who owns the parking spots? Someone will need to grant permission for the chargers to be installed.

London cabbies are very savvy about the location of the free chargers around town....

I’m not sure who owns the cul de sac but there is a company that manages the greens, does the weeding etc so I’ll check.

Just to say that if (finally and hopefully) city centres will be closed to all private cars, then this will affect poor and rich alike (unless you consider people who can afford to take a taxi 'rich').
The final nail in CityCentre retail perhaps?

I thought London cabs were hybrids.

My buddies charge theirs overnight at home and that does them for a shift. I always thought that the little petrol engine charges the battery although do stand to be corrected.

A cabbie I spoke to said he does just that, i.e. charge at home on night tariff, it cost him a tenner to charge at the end of the day from 10% to 90%.

However those that live outside London may need to top up during the day, if they don't want to drive home using the (expensive) petrol engine.

Adapt of die... nothing new about that. City centres need to reinvent themselves and not rely on private vehicle traffic.

I suspect that generally the further North and the further West you go, then the fewer the number of EVs. I split my time between the (North) Midlands and South West:
I see lots of Tesla's around the Poole and Bournemouth area. Not sure which model.
It's the big ugly one (dual motor). Why is a saloon car so damn big?

Is there street lighting outside the houses? If so, there's a feed. Whoever owns the car park might be interested in some sort of revenue sharing scheme with an EV charging provider.

One lives in Leavesden near the Harry Potter Studios and the other lives in Sandy. I’ll ask them what they do.

The 3rd one has got a 63 plate diesel Vito.

No street lights.
I could be wrong but I don’t think the garages have power either.

However, I don't think you are going to get the public to rise an hour earlier when they never had to before.
Why should anyone get up an hour earlier? Do you know how long it takes to remove a plug from a socket?

Then why aren't they buying EVs?
Because they’re not cheap enough, not good enough, and unsuited to many uses.

The same reasons that you and I haven’t bought an EV

Except that you think the big issue is charging time. Which obviously it isn’t. It’s just that you can’t get your head around that specific prejudice.

Obviously the bulk of charging is done overnight and off peak, which is why the Grid loves EV’s.

The real load is daytime when EV’s will rarely be charging

This is interesting on the realism of deadlines. It's all very well the government saying that new houses must have EV chargers and heat pumps installed but where is the power going to come from. To do both was going to increase the installed electricity supply for a new housing estate from 8 MW to 35 MW and the builders have been told they can only have 15 MW which may mean they can only build half as many houses. It's not as if we are building anywhere near enough houses as it is. Something will have to give and I'm betting on the heat pump deadline. Yes it's the SNP and they will do anything to be different but their deadline is only one year ahead.

SNP warned house-building will grind to halt over gas boiler ban

Hi , please don't shout at me but I read this evening that the government is having a minor rethink on sales dates of new cars.

Are you referring to this?

That's from last month.
