Wheel nuts

I had a flat tyre on my 1996 E420. When I tried to put the spare wheel on found that the wheel nuts were too short for the spare. It is the same pattern alloy but the holes must be slighter thicker! I need to find extra longer nuts - can anyonhe advise?

Newer MB's have spare bolts in a case often floating around the boot.

Sounds like you should have the same thing somewhere.

Its normally the other way around!

When you say 420 is this a W124?

It will use standard MB bolts which have a 40mm shank.

Thanks: the car is an E420 4.2 estate - originally German and LHD - the hole in the spare wheel seems to have a thickness of 25mm which is thicker than that on the 4 car wheels - when I tried to put the spare on the nuts would not reach the holes - I am in Romania at the moment and cannot use the spare wheel without the longer nuts!

Sounds like you have non genuine wheels to me. Do any of the wheels have a Mercedes part number cast into the rear of the wheel? Do you have pictures?

If this is a W210 car, I suspect the wheels are off a CLK and the spare is the original wheel.

Thanks everyone, but still confused! The spare wheel has a part number on the back - can I think be seen at: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=31778&stc=1&d=1348160659

The wheels on the car seem to be identical to the spare apart from this porblem of having less deep holes for nuts! I don't feel like taking a wheel off again in the dark, but am sure they are Merc wheels. No idea where to get the slighter longer wheel nuts - help!

Sorry did not think the pictures would be huge - new to this. but you can certainly see the wheel number!

Certainly looks like my suspicion was correct. Wheel in the boot is genuine and wheels on the car are replicas! You need the standard Mercedes wheel bolts for your spare. Nothing special.
