When did they update c class diesel engines?

Planning my next Merc, and looking through parkers guide the w204 diesels state significantly mpg than my current w203 (which is really poor, and i've often wondered if, even though i do a fair few miles, i might as well have got the petrol!).

Does anyone know if the engines were updated for the start of w204 range, or was it halfway through the production (at the 2011/2012 facelift for example)? Looking at for sale adverts the early ones seem to visually appear the same as my current engine.

The early 4 cylinder diesels started with the OM 646 [ your engine] 2007-2009 and fairly quickly changed to the OM651 which had a lot of teething problems with injectors and timing chains . You would be lucky to find an OM646 engined W204 now that hasn't done mega miles

It's possible. When I got my 58 plate w204 2.5 years ago it had only done 53k. I'm on 83 now.

Also in the w203 I don't think you got the 646evo version with 168bhp like mine.

Does it have to be an MB ? it appears you are setting your sights quite low at a 5 to 6 year old diesel car that you want to give you max mpg. Tons of stuff out there without a 3 pointed star on it that might be a better bet.

And when you say your current mpg is really 'poor' , what figures are you talking and what kind of driving are you doing ?

Didn't the 204 220 change with the 2011MY facelift, or did the BE engined cars come earlier? My 204 is July 2008 registered and is not BE or anything, so RF costs me about £245pa rather than about £180 for the newer lower emissions engine.

Rgarding MPG, I changed from a 2001 C270 to a 2008 C220, same BHP but I get similar, but not quite as good, MPG from the 220 compared to the 270 (at least, according to the dashboard display on both) irrespective of the type of journey. Difference is no more than 2-5mpg.

CO2 missions can vary based on vehicle configuration, e.g. estate vs saloon, wheels size, automatic transmission etc.

Additionally emissions are sometimes reduced even on the same base engine by changes to the intake and exhaust systems.

Said that I don't know if it's the same engine or not...

Reg lookup FP09CLU makes it 2148cc rather than 2143cc which makes it a SINGLE TURBO OM 646 DE 22LA rather than the later twinturbo OM651

The 651 C200 204 is a single turbo, but C220 and 250 are twin.

Thanks for that link (why didn't I think of wikipedia?!!)...interesting that only the c220 changes engines, c250 and others stay same. Interesting bit I picked up was the introduction of the 7sp auto in 2011 which seems to coincide with improved economy...maybe that's the reason?!

Yes!

And 36mpg on a steady 50mph run (have had another of same car previously and it got 38mpg but was lower mileage)

The 7G+ box was fitted from the 2011 facelift onwards and made a noticeable difference to the fuel economy.

There must be something wrong with your car; I’ve owned W203 diesels of every inclination and even the V6 mpg was in the forties on a run, the 4cyl 50ish but the best by a long stretch was the IL5 270 which would do mid fifties with ease - what a great engine that was.

What did your 204 220cdi do out of interest Lee?

Average was 42mpg and that was driven roughly 75% local/25% motorway.

Motorway was 60mpg if I took it steady, 48mpg if I need to be somewhere...:D
