When selling a car...

Sometimes they come to see the car. Some while ago, selling my wife's Metro GTA, a young lad came round with his 'expert' friend. I could tell after a few minutes that he'd decided that he just didn't want it, but the only reason the expert could come up with was "the carburettor sounds funny"...

yep agreed there was a picture and dimensions in the ad, so pretty sure they would have been able to tell it wasn't slim line. That was when i gave up with eBay

I have to say Lee, I have had an E70 X5 today for the day, and...........I really didn't like it at all.

It was a 10 plate, but it felt tired, very crashy, interior very dated (which is weird as it looks similar to our X3) and just not very well put together, or it has just aged badly.

I have had brand new ones for the day before and always thought they were OK, but after living with my X3 I hate to say it but it felt like a real step backward.

What was the mileage on it?

Did the steering feel heavy to you?

Did anyone let you out of a side road or did you have to sit there for three hours like I do?

63k miles.
But it was on run flats and 20" wheels so probably shaken the thing to bits over the years.

Yeah it was heavy and I like heavy, I preferred it to my X3 in that respect. They were 275 fronts as well though and that ruined it as it just keeps puling and got tiring very quickly.
I had a 30d for just over a week a few years back and that was on funny looking 18s, but they were 255 wide from memory and had some bounce in them, and that was lovely, but it was also a month old with only a 1000 miles or so on it.

Some BMWs, especially ones that are physically big, do tend to get other road users to pretend you're not there.
But then I get that in my old mans ML350, but never did in my W163. I do think black and white cars annoy people more than say a blue one.

This is the other side of the coin, dealing with bell-end sellers:
(Car is on eBay auction without reserve)

Me: would it be possible if I came to view your car Monday or Tuesday, I'm only about 40 minutes away so can come at relatively short notice.

Seller: if you're happy with the car, how much are you willing to offer?

Me: With the greatest of respect, I won't offer until I've seen it, I don't think it's fair on either of us. I'm selling my X5 and have only just started looking at these and liked the look of yours (and you're in Yorkshire too).

I can understand if you're a bit weary of time wasters, I'm going through similar myself at the minute with my X5, but I think it's only fair that I see it before making you an offer.

Seller: Sorry but I'm not prepared to spend time with you viewing the car on these terms. You will have a maximum price you want to pay and that may be much lower than I'm looking for.

Good luck

Me: And how much are you looking for?

Seller: What's the most you'd pay?

:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

I gave up at that point, I thought I could be here for days with this Hampton...

My Easter prediction was way out!
Get over your grey allergy - it's great!

Lol Lee looks like your having a great time with this car buying and selling malarkey

I gave up years ago just trade in and then get on with the next car. Mind you I've never came out on top with this trade in ****. Seems like they always win and I always lose.

As a seller, if you want the best price (and why wouldn't you?) you have to put up with more than a few bell-ends and their inane questions.

Fortunately, bell-ends have cash too, so bite your lip!

Trading-in is obviously the easy option, and you will be very popular with the dealer because dealers just love lazy people.....

What a complete d1ck.

I think there are some people that are just not cut out to sell stuff.

Before Xmas I spotted a needed-tlc Landcruiser, fairly local. To be fair to him he'd pointed out 2/3 faults that it had which can occur on them. Said in listing "please ask any questions you need to". Sent message "hi, interested, want to view, can work with you on timings".
No response, it dropped off a week later.
On again following week as an auction, didn't hit reserve, no response to a "can I see it?". Got p*ssed off by this stage. Also annoyed because of the rarity - can't just jog along to the next one a mile away etc.
It came on as a buy-now £750 less than it made at auction before Xmas two weeks ago. I messaged "Hi, see it still hasn't gone, you must be fed up, can I ask some questions then view it?"
Got a very nice, polite response five days later (yes 5)............"yes of course you can view it, I'd expect no less, been stuck with it as previous buyer made me have it garage inspected who pronounced it good apart from what I'd mentioned in listing, buyer then started trying to renegotiate". I then asked for a number. Nothing for three days then its down as sold on buy now about 18 hrs before the end. Sent a message saying "See I missed it even though you never came back to me, let me know if it doesn't work out, here's my number...."

Yep, you guessed it. Relisted with no contact again.

Mate of mine had right one when he sold his car a few years ago. The guy who turned up was interested in the car but as the car only had 3 months MOT he wanted a full year if he was going to buy it.
After getting it MOT'd buyer then wanted a HPI check. After the check was done, buyer wanted a full AA inspection done on the car. Car passed the inspection and the buyer paid the asking price.
3 months later the buyer phones up to say the reverse light has stopped working. You can imagine what my mate told him.

To be fair I get where he is coming from.

I had a few wanting to view it, then when I went back and said I was looking for close to asking price but totally understood if they didn't feel it was for them after viewing, but don't turn up and expect to knock 20% off the price.
5 people then said "Oh, I won't bother coming then, I want to know I have haggled well." or "Oh, I won't bother coming then, I only have £xxxx to spend.".

For me getting the car ready for a viewing is a ball ache, having to wash it all again, clean the inside and then make sure I am around during the day for them to view.

But there is a far better way to say it then how he did.

But so many, even traders, don't bother with that.

We looked a a 3 yr old fiesta at a local traders who specialise in Fords. Car was dirty inside & out and had scabby paint on several panels - of course he didn't bother to mention that on the phone.
When we asked if they would be dealing with the paint they said that it was caused by bird poo not having been cleaned off by the previous owner and doesn't affect the value of the car and if they had any paintwork done they would have to put up the price of the car and they then wouldn't be able to sell it:doh:

Think you've misunderstood; the car was/is in eBay auction with no 'buy-it-now' so I didn't even have a figure to work from, it had only been on four six hours so was at something like £567.

Oh right, haha, what a numpty!

If you don't want the hassle then that's what part-exing a scruffy car is for.
I agree that we all have to deal with tossers but it goes with the territory.

Sorry to ask this Lee if it's already been covered but have you tried the WBAC route for selling your X5?

Ant.

No pal, WBAC aren't my type of sale.

I suppose a small part of me enjoys these delightful people and as the great George Carlin once wrote: "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."
