...not "what is the right thing to do?"....what do *YOU* do?

We all know the deal...you're on a clear motorway making good progress and some idiot is hogging lane 2....or even worse, lane 3+.

I've found that in the last couple of years I've steadily gone from waiting patiently for them to eventually move over :wallbash:.....to flashing them once to 'remind' them to move over :thumb:.....to now almost-routinely undertaking them: very slowly with headlights on, making sure the hard shoulder is clear in case they suddenly move in . I hate having to do it, due to their stupidity (and I'll concede, partly due to my impatience!) - I'm otherwise a 100% law abiding citizen.

Total idiots. I hope they have no kids so they can't pass on their stupidity genes! They even do it when information boards say "keep left unless overtaking" or a new one I saw this week..."don't hog the middle lane". There is no excuse.

Rant over.

Excellent rant, I too have no time for these ignorant drivers who clearly have no concpetion of road etiquette. They roam around without any spacial awareness whatsover, frankly, I believe they are danger to other drivers, as they haven't a clue what's going on around them - doesn't that make them dangerous drivers?
I have to undertake these muppets, getting on the horn just elevates my heart rate and get's me in the mood for a fight. It's much easier to just undertake as safely as possible and just get rid of them as quickly as possible.
You would think this is an infrequent occurance, but it seems it's fairly standard these days to come across frontal lobotomy out-patients on every road at all times of the day.
Ahhh, that's better, my rant over now!

Lane 2 hoggers on approach behind them long alternating headlight flash to let them know I'm there and move over.

Lane 3 hoggers repeated short headlight flash then prolonging the flash as I get closer.

Just remember though

undertaking = mandatory ban if caught.

I actually agree with the law when it comes to those rare occasions you encounter of people weaving through the traffic, cutting people up. But surely you can't apply the same penalty to someone undertaking a lane 3 hogger at 5mph more in lane 1.

It's quite simple, they need to get harsh with the lane hoggers. I call it 'points for pointlessness'.

Lane 2 hoggers , just move into lane 3 and overtake them , no drama.

Lane 3 hoggers get a flash

What I really don't get is when you come up behind someone in lane 3 when lane 2 and 1 are clear, wait for them to move over, wait for the usual scowl, and then once I pass them, they then move back into lane 3 :dk:

Did something change in the Highway code?

Boy this gets me going. Why do we never hear of the cameras out there being used to award even just one of these "drivers" points or a fine or both!! I'm sure any car can be followed for many a'mile on the camera system.
I do not drive for a living so do not have to get from A to B under pressure. Otherwise I may feel even stronger than I do now about this hinderance of my progress.
I wait (and wait, and wait) to go past them in the correct lane. Horn blowing and "the finger" mean nothing to them as their "unfocused gaze" remains fixed on a point known only unto them.
So come on camera teams and Smokey (non intended) in you marked or unmarked. Get them sorted.

Bear in mind some of them are from Europe and they think they are in the Inside Lane.;)

Ha ha YES! So true.

The lack of ANY logic is hilarious.

There is one positive to these people....I'm no genius so the presence of these guys on the Earth makes me feel good about myself! :bannana:

In the States and Canada you can undertake and the traffic seems to flow much better, drivers don't seem to get so wound up about being stuck behind morons...

You can also turn right on a red light. Now, since I would have the sense to look before turning, I think "good idea" but then we return to the root cause of this discussion....morons. I bet they pull out without looking all the time. Now I'm thinking "bad idea".

Unfortunately, you need to make rules which apply to all of society. I think if you allowed undertaking, it would lead to a lot more accidents than not allowing it does.

Maybe we should have something like a phone line you can report these tools to. If a driver gets more than a certain number of complaints in a space of time, they get a fine and points. Ideally, death. :thumb:

I am increasingly aware of these morons. I try, where possible, to pass in the correct manner all the time. Going from lane 1 to 3 and back to 1. Some of them get the message, and follow suit into lane 1. But for the few that don,t, seem, when i,m passing, to be totally oblivious to either me, or the line of traffic they are holding up. It seems as if they are set on staying put, so as not to negotiate any obstacle in the inside lane. I hate to think how many jams are caused by these irritating oiks.

Lane 2 hogger can be passed in lane 3. If in lane 1 and approaching a lane 3 hogger I move accross the 3 lanes then back to lane 1 and have a look in the mirror to see if they get the hint, quite often they will as they'll see you move to lane 1 after passing them in lane 3.

Lane 3 hogger. Flash lights. Never see it as hoggers prefer the middle lane. Usually see lane 1 empty and 2 and 3 full on the M8 3 lane section thru glasgow east, I tend to go down lane 1 undertaking.

If they are overtaking vehicles in lane 1 and 2 and are using 3, you just have to wait even if your desired speed of travel is higher than theirs.

Isn't this what bumpers/nudge bars are for ? :devil::D:D

I was heading back home from a friends house in the slk yestarday evening, I was behind a 2005 bmw m3 on the dual carrige which was lane hogging, he slows down right to 45-50mph then floors it and then slows down again, he was being silly so I didnt bother becuase I know i'll be pushing him down the dual carrige way if I put my foot down, he was thinking hes leaving me behind, intill we got to some set of lights...;):D:D

I watched an Audi drive up the M1 for about 40 miles on saturday - in lane 3 with no other cars within miles..

I am surprised to learn that undertaking is a mandatory ban:crazy:

I belive that the Highway Code says you can undertake in "congested conditions -rule 268" but doesnt say what speed that is. I personaly favour lane one as its often free and i sit at 70mph;if that results in undertaking then the others are in "congested conditions" but not me? Having to change from lane One across lane two, to overtaking in lane three is far more dangerous.

Its a mess in this country. I thought the "powers that be" were going to allow undertaking when they opened the hard shoulder for vehicles on the M42

I recently saw a car in lane 3 on the Exeter bypass, I was in lane one and could see a police car coming up behind us with full "blues & twos". It came up behind the car in lane 3 which had 2 ladies in it chatting away and gave then an almighty blast and flashed headlight....not a reaction at all!:wallbash:
The police car stayed behind for about 2 mins with this and then pulled into lane 2 and alongside, down with the window and the policeman leant out to get their attention...no chance still chatting away!

I thought they were going to get the book thrown at them :ban: but the policeman just threw his hands up in horror and sped on, no doubt to the emergency they were having to attend

I was so disappointed:devil:

IIRC the M42 hard shoulder is only opened in congested conditions then a 50mph speed limit is imposed. So I guess undertaking is then allowed as it's already covered in the rule you mention.
