I know this sounds silly, but I have looked in my haynes manual but cant actually find any pictures ( decipherable at least) to illustarte where in my engine bay I can find my Throttle body and Distributer cap. I even bought one of those service manual CD's off Ebay, but that didnt really help.

BTW, I have a 1990 RHD 300 CE 24-valve petrol!

The reason Im asking is that I have certain idle problmes, and one of the easiest ( and cheapest) first steps Ive seen is to clean the throttle body and Distributer cap - sounds easy enough for a mechanicla dunce like me, but I have to find it first!!:o

Cheers

Take a look in the link and 38 is the throttle body,,you can take out all of the screws and remove to clean with carb cleaner.

Do not turn any screws or alter the throttle plate, thats the large round plate that moves up and down that sticks and needs cleaning.

Distributor cap is 26 in the link

Many thanks for the quick (and detailed!) reponse!. I think Im clear with the distributor cap location, but from the diagram Im still unsure of the location of the throttle body - is it right if the Distributor cap in the engine bay?

If you take the air cleaner off you will see the throttle body under it the large round hole on top goes into the air cleaner box. so standing at the front of the car the air box is on the right hand side of the engine once the air box is off the throttle body will be at the front of the engine,, all of the injection pipes go into the back end of it

Thats great, many thanks again.

I removed the air cleaner box ( just the lid / Filter itself) and the throttle appeared pretty clean, I pressed the thing down and it didnt seem too sticky, anyway I used some kitchen roll the wipe around it un under the flap and put it all back together. Anyway, started the engine and - :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: it seems to have done the trick!. Of course I need to give the engine a good run to see, but fingers crossed!. If that is it, then blimey that was a cheap fix!!!

Cheers!

The throttle flap is actually item number 86 which sits underneath the fuel distributor unit, which is what you have inspected so far.

The moving flap is the air flow plate which determins how much fuel to inject into the engine.

Thanks, but seems the problem came straight back.

Im going to book it into a garage to look at next week. I was told about a guy whos worked on Merc's for donkeys years ( used to service a relatives W124 Saloon) who I took the car to yesterday for a quick look. He's not sure yet what the erratic idle is, but he diagnosed the more worrying knocking sounds as a knackered belt tensioner (IIRC), which he will fix, and look at the oil leak at the front of the engine. Hopefully then he'll look at the erratic idle.

Cheers
