Might not be in budget ........

Suppose so but on the "lightly used" market they will be...E220cdi and E250cdi manual standard, E350cdi auto, factor that in and the difference is under £2k, do some haggling.....

Why not buy an E350cdi.
See the link to my views on the new E estate posted earlier.

Not enough legroom for me (details in that link) and I don't like the new rear seat arrangement.

For Scumbag's benefit I am a standard trouser size (so MB designers should be well aware of the necessary dimensions) and I had more than enough legroom in the A and B class, and in the ML and the S class I owned as well as in my current 211 E class estate and in all previous E class cars I have owned. And I stopped growing long ago, so it 's not me.

I also have enough legroom in the 5 series and even in the little X1.

Oddly enough the new E class saloon with manual seats has enough legroom for me but the estate with electric seats does not. Could it be something to do with wanting to fold the rear seats down without removing the headrests?

Sorry I forgot about this.

You must sit in a very different way to me in a car as I have never found leg room an issue in any car. I sit quite close to the wheel though for maximum control IMHO.

Electric seats dont have the same scope adjustment as the motors take up room etc. Manual adjustment seats certainly go lower from experience

yes , your seat is in a very feminine position. :)

Not sure about that then. The seats in mine, which have the AMG back, so taking up a bit of room themselves, fodl whilst keeping the headrests, and the seats go right back. That said, if you send the front seat back, you can't fold the rears down due to the shape of the back of these front seats, you need to send them forward a bit, fold the back down and send them back again.

There is a lot of travel on my seats.

mind you, it is the poor mans E class, what with it being the council house C class.

Ideally you should sit back far enough so that the squab supports your thighs and the wheel should have enough reach adjustment to bring it as close to you as you wish. Not too near or the airbag will harm you.

I don't like the seat low down. It seems to me quite unnatural to sit almost on the floor. I like it as high as I can sensibly sit with a good view ahead but with reasonable head clearance from the roof.

I agree that the eltctric seats may well have less range than the manual ones but that has never been a problem for me with previous E's (or A's, B's, C's, ML's or an S).

Maybe the one I sat in was faulty. Let us hope one day I will sit in another and magically it will have as much legroom as the manually adjusted saloons -which were just fine for me. But I still won't buy one while the engines are failing all over Europe. Just read this from a new member on the injector thread: -

SPenny88: - Hi everyone, I have now had my c200 fixed with new injectors and have done nearly 1200 miles and all seems ok, I do have to say that I thought the perfomance of the car had deteriorated and the MPG was down to 40, but its getting better and the performance is now as before.

Still have no confidence with the car having broke down 3 times,MB customer service just terrible, I will never ,ever buy MB again.

The problem with all this is lack of communication, to be succesfull in the job that I do do (pharma sales manager) you have to have excellanet communication skills both with internal and external customers, without this you will lose customers, if we as a company can not deliver what we promise then we tell our customers as to why and when they can expect there goods, on the whole we get very few complaints.

My car was through a lease company, who when I requested a buy back were not interested, they had my money so why should they care.

Anyway,my car is back on my drive and im trying to fall in love with it again(bought it some flowers today, well it is valnetines day!) but im still so worreid that the new injectors will fail me.

Any way on a funnier note, my friends and family find the whole thing hilarious as I kept going on about my new MB and how nice it is and how good it looks etc etc ..........wish I kept my mouth shut!

For those still going through the pain, stick at it..........theres more to life than a MB.

I think one of the issues that is effecting MB and its place in the world is that by common acclaim things aint what they used to be.
Complaints on this forum about rust, paint, general build quality, model specific gripes and terrible dealership response far outnumber the opposite, although many of us me included are very satisfied.
Going back into my early days as a motorist, around the time of the first massive petrol price rises in the 70s, I remember most motorists carried a toolkit and a number of essential spares plus water. oil and a tow rope because even the best maintained vehicles were inheritantly unreliable and minor breakdowns frequent. At this time MB owners probably didn't have the mechanical failures the rest of us endured because they were driving cars miles ahead of the rest.
Now everyone has caught up and MB has to be judged against the standards others set not the standards it chooses to set itself and until it re establishes a significant lead over its competiton it will never again justify its premium position even amongst fans.

I've had my car since late 05. I think the 7 speed box is silky smooth. I'm sure it's had it's software flashed but on the whole I'm pleased with it. I'm sure BMW's may be more economical but as *** said what's the odd mpg in the greater scheme of things. At least my car isn't on bone shaking run flats and I don't have to wear White socks to drive it. :)
