Evening all
I'm slowly getting a nasty headache trying to establish what type of alternator I have on my E class. It's a 2002 e220 CDI. The vin is WDB2100062B500773. Looking on the Russian parts site at the appropriate diagram the alternators shown don't look anything like the one on my car.
The Russian site shows 5 different alternators, 3 Bosch and 2 Valeo that have the mounting bolts running front to back, whereas I've got one that's like this...

IMAG0073.jpg

..mounting bolts going sideways into the block. After trawling through the different model numbers the first E class fitted with the alternator in the picture is a w211.022 as far as I can see. Anyway the reason for looking in the first place is because the pulley needs changing and I was wondering if the same pulley fitted the various different makes. I've been unable to find any model number or makers name on it either, so I'm a bit stumped now. Any expert help would be most welcome.

Looks like the original water-cooled alternator A0001502450 has been swapped to another (less expensive) part.

That type of mounting is used on alternators on several Mercedes Commercial vehicles. I suggest a look in the commercial vehicle section [with your engine]might prove fruitful. However as has been said it looks like a reconditioned unit- hence the lack of identifying labels. looks like a re-manufactured Valeo [no ventilation slats]

p.s. have had a slightly worrying thought -have you checked your engine no against the VIN details??

pps:- Russian parts site appears to be down at the moment?

thanks for the information chaps, I'm busy at work at the moment, will look for the engine number later. It's getting more interesting by the minute, uncovering the past history of the car.

only bosch and Delphi are genuine fitted from factory alternators according to your vin.
Bosch pulley 2000 my on is 6111550415 £96.35
Delphi pulley is same modified number. I would strongly suggest checking with your local dealer first though.

Evening all,
Well' I've had a poke around the engine bay but can't see a number anywhere. The owner's manual has a picture with an arrow pointing in the general direction of God knows where on the block but the exact spot has evaded me so far. Anyway, managed to take a pic of the pulley showing a part number, which was the original point of the whole exercise, I can make out....INA 22936 5 GERMANY 615 R 0201

If the unit is a valeo as Grober says, is there any way I could cross reference the Ina part number with the Mercedes one? The w211.022 unit I mentioned previously has A6421500660 listed for the pulley if that's any help.

Oh, and the belt has been deflecting this far.....

Get a pulley from Euro Car parts. Half the price of MB and the same part. Just quote them your reg number and ask for a "freewheeling" alternator pulley.

Remember it needs a special tool to remove it and they are VERY tight.

Tried them today but was told they don't stock them :dk:. They've got the removal tool though, thought I'd get this set..Sealey SX400 Alternator Freewheel Pulley Removal Set 6pc as it may help to remove the pulley on the wife's Picasso when that packs up.

New pulley arrived yesterday, from JCR Supplies in Walthamstow. Gave the chap the INA number and received one with a Bosch number, C230307. Got the old one off using the Sealey tool with no trouble and now have a smooth running serpentine belt at tickover :p . I now realise that the pulley has been knackered not only since I've had the car but also since the previous owner, a good friend, had owned it. He mentioned the belt looking a bit "funny" when he first got the car, that's a total of five years now  .

I've also discovered the reason why the tickover slowed down when pushing the brake pedal, something it's also been doing for five years.. someone had adjusted the throttle linkage under the bonnet to raise the idle speed, I imagine in an effort to stop the belt flapping about. Now I've adjusted some slack back into the cable all is serene, the tickover now sitting at 600 rpm.
Thanks for all your advice folks and thanks to JCR who were very helpful. Their number if anyone needs it is 0208 521 6494.
