Not too long ago on recommendation from another quite well known member I had my E Class W211 retro fitted for Comand by Braybrooks. Neil from Braybrooks seemed a nice chap and after about 20 mins and £385 later he installed the wiring. Sadly unbeknown to me the navigation module was broken and the full testing procedure could not be checked. To Neils defence the Comand displayed a different message from before telling me to "insert DVD Disk" as apposed to "No Navigation Device Available" so this gave a little confidence that all was right. Navigation Modules are hard to come by and its took quite some months to obtain one. The drive has been tested and works perfect however when fitted to my car it displays the "Insert DVD Disk" message even though there's a disk in?

I am now started to think maybe the disk is wrong? The disk is a 4.1 APS DVD Disk.

Are there different types and if so bearing inmind my command is the full screen command which one would I need.

I be interested in anyones thoughts or ideas

The disk should not matter as 4.1 is old but correct for the COMAND-APS with boot mounted nav system (i.e E/CLS/SL/old-S/old-CL/SLK)

See the comand-aps FAQ at http://www.mercupgrades.com for disk information.

Sounds like you need someone to plug in a Star Diagnosis machine and do a proper diagnosis of what is really wrong.

Cheers

After £385 for only 20 minutes and not working at the end , i'd not be having the same nice thoughts as you.

New one out soon, waiting for bloke from milton k. to update me on the release date.

The proper 4.1 version will work in a correctly installed COMAND system but why on earth use an old DVD that will NOT allow you to use the navigation system to its full potential?

This person my be a good bloke, I have never met him so have no opinion either way, but if I were doing the install I would at the very least tell the customer that TMC will only work from version 5 onwards? No doubt there is a very good reason why this was not mentioned hence my tactful answer. ;)

Good luck getting this issue resolved.

Let me clarify my comment :-)

I have heard only good things about the quality of Braybrooks work, and in fact I link to them from my website (or I did at one point).

However, if the job only took 20 minutes, then the wiring from front to back of car (for Nav DVD processor) must have been there already, so £385 is really really steep. Even a MB dealer wouldn't charge that much (saying that, some dealer's would try it). And given the net result is 'it isn't working' would personally upset me a lot.

I don't know whether Braybrooks has access to Star machine (does your cluster have the navigation menu enabled in it?) , but if so the diagnosis should be pretty easy.

I believe (from your posting) that you bought the parts from somewhere else, and just asked Braybrooks to fit them - that, of course, is always hard for the installer to then deal with it when he doesn't know the origin of the parts (i.e. that they were guaranteed working)

Cheers

Hi Richard

I purchased the Head Unit and Navigation drive from Lithuania (Ebay) Headunit was fine and because my car was fitted with a Audio Gateway setting up was pretty straight forward.

I have yet to get back to Braybrooks (Neil) although I did phone him not too long ago to let him know how I was progressing.

I am a little disappointed because Neil said that my Navigation Unit was broken meaning for the last few months I have been chasing one only to find the old Navigation Unit was alright.

I am so far out of pocket and NOT sure where to go next? I am also not convinced that by connecting my system to the STAR diagnostics will highlight what the problem is?

Neil from Braybrooks stated that the Navigation Unit should work without being coded into the dash. Sadly mine doesn't

Totally at a loss

I whole heartedly agree with Richard has said here.

Many comand APS units require coding in order to make them work irrespective of the cluster being enabled or not. For instance if you take a COMAND APS out of a car which has say a phone or Cd changer and place it into a car which does not have either of these, then it will simply turn off after a few seconds because it doesnt find what it wants on the MOST fibre bus.

The only real way to find out what is wrong is to hook the car up to a STAR machine and run a check, just as Richard has said. This will tell you what is wrong.
