Going to be servicing my dads merc this weekend but not sure which oil filter to go for. I understand there are many brands but which one is the best guys?

Mann, Hengst, Mahle, Bosche....now I know they're all good brands and from what I understand most of them are used by Merc as "genuine" also...hmm...

Get a price from the dealer parts dept first, quite often very competitive and you know it'll be correct quality

Just got a price from Andrew Page. Mann filter for £9.39+vat. Will see what the dealer has to say...

I got a Bosch oil filter from GSF car parts for about £4.00 they often do pretty big discount offers over a weekend. Try a few searches on the car parts web sites and see who is discounting at the moment.

I recall seeing an OEM brand oil filter against a genuine MB filter. There was a noticeable difference in the filter pattern (OEM had less weave) and fit.

Genuine MB aren't too expensive, my w140 filter is about £8. Comes with the copper compression washer and sump plug too.

Try MB Of Newcastle on ebay, they have good prices and quick delivery.

2nd this. They have been very good value. Especially on oil. Just make sure you buy enough parts at a time to justify the £8 delivery fee.

Ended up buying a Mann filter for the car today before seeing all the new replies to this thread. Paid £11 and was the cheapest I could find.

I bought a Mann filter for my (then) E55K at a very good price from ECP mail order a couple of years ago. What actually turned up was a Bosch filter, made in Tunisia.

I never did get round to sending it back, but it still sits on my desk as I type. Illogical, perhaps, but I can't quite bring myself to use it...

Mann, Hengst, Mahle, Bosch...

I use all of the above and have no specific preference other than price and availability.

As for OE... my 2006 car had factory-fitted Mann air filter, Hengst cabin filter, and Mahle fuel filter. Did not spot any Bosch filters though.

BTW I think that Mann, Hengst, and Mahle are all part of the same group.

Just to add to this, a "genuine" filter is made for Mercedes, Mercedes don't make most of the parts for there cars, Mann supplied Mercedes to a certain age, and I think purflux supply a lot now.

When an MB item also has the original manufacturer P/N (in addition to the MB P/N) then the manufacturer's-branded item and the MB-branded item should be technically identical, the differences would be only in warranty etc.

However when the item only has the manufacturer's name or logo but not the manufacturer's P/N (i.e. it has only the MB P/N), it is not possible to know if you are buying the same item when buying an MB-Branded item and a manufacturer's-branded item. It is quite common for car makers to have items made to order, and then they may or may not grant the manufacturer permission to make and sell these times under their own brand.

The reason I know this is because I was involved in a court case regarding this issue some 20 years ago....
