HI all

have the standard 15" 8 holes alloys on my 320 coupe. 195/65's

which tyre would people recommend for grip and wet, not worried about noise or how quickly they wear down

matt.

There was a similar thread a while ago. I believe Goodyear F1's get the vote. Reasonably priced too.

Pirelli P6000s were original fitment weren't they? I would go for the new GY Asymmetrics of you can get hold of them or Continental SC2s.

My last five cars, and my wife's last three, have all used the same size tyres (195/65R15) so between us we have some useful experience of different brands.

The most disappointing was a set of Colway winter tyres which gripped well enough but were very noisy and gave poor fuel consumption. The best for wet grip were Vredestein all-season tyres, which were also better in snow and ice than the winter Colways. But the Vredesteins were very noisy, and didn't perform well over standing water when they were getting near replacement time.

One of my wife's cars came with Pirelli P6000 tyres and they were poor in the wet, noisy and wore rapidly.

Michelin Primacy were very good all round but extremely expensive. I am currently using Michelin Energy E3A on my W124 E300 Diesel and they are fine except for wet grip, which isn't great.

The brand that has been best for us is Continental. My wife's car is now running on Continental EcoContact and I have bought a new set ready to fit to mine (I have an extra set of wheels) when the Michelins wear out. The Continentals are quiet, hard wearing and have excellent grip in the wet.

We don't have any experience of the many other brands you can buy these days, but on the basis of our experience we would probably choose Continental again.

I agree that Contis represent one of the best all round packages where price a a consideration, having used them on two previous cars. Michelin would be my preference but as has been said many times they are pricey, and Pirellis wear too quick.
I have Goodyear F1 GSD3s currenty on my c240 sport and concur that grip is very good but must say that I am very disappointed with the ride on uneven surfaces. The unique tread pattern seems easly affected and causes some pretty awful tramlining....maybe its me being oversensitive but I will be changing to either Michelin primacy or Conti 3s very shortly, so if anyone is interested in some lightly used 225/45/17 F1s (5000miles), they are for sale at £35 each.

If you do not look into Falkens you are missing a trick.

Have a major test report somewhere from a few years back showing Falkens verses all the major brands and they come second overall in the test with a particularly high score for wet weather performance.

Price very competitive too, but not everyone stocks them.

Any "Tom **** or Harry" tyre company can make a tyre perform in the dry, its the wet weather performance that is the true test and the most important.

GoodYear Hydragrip have my note

I bought 4 Goodyear Hydragrip 195/65*15V in August (paid £195 from Blackcircles, including fitting balancing etc).

They have now done 12000 miles, less than half worn, fantastic grip in the wet, slightly noisier that previous Firestones.

I will definitely buy them again.

good tyre fitter in Brum

as an addendum to the original thread, can anyone recommend a good fitter in Brum who will fit supplied tyres (think i can get some Continentals). if they can check alignment that would be good too.

Have tried different brands over the years, but the Michelins remain the best in my experience. I have the Pilot Primacy on the car - quiet, hard wearing and excellent performance.

For wet roads, I can recommend these as the best wet weather tyres I have tried, outstanding grip in the wet & still great when dry. May not last as long as some other makes, but that's because they have grip when the others do not.

Well worth considering,

I don't think they'll fit tyres you supply, but I bought two sets of tyres from BMTR (A34 near Perry Barr dog track), and they were as competitive as the online suppliers. Great service too.

Of course it depends upon the tyre but you may find it worthwhile to call them.
