Windows 10

So far the only snag I've hit is the lack of Synaptics drivers, so edge scrolling on the touchpad isn't working (and neither are any of the so-called workaround). Not really a showstopper, two digit scrolling is working.

All done took about a hour to do,after i stopped the original download after 3 hours :fail all the set up have altered from windows 7 to 10 hell of a jump so have to get used to windows 10 it does seem a lot faster

Upgraded on Wednesday.

Seems slightly 'heavy', not sure if it's actually faster than 8.1 was.

Otherwise OK.

Curiously, it's just started working. How rare.

It's a "free" upgrade. Who cares?

If it costs you time or effort or you're taking a risk then it's not 'free'. It's just it doesn't have a price sticker.

Whether win 10 slows a little or not over the next few months is irrelevant to me.

Great if you;'ve got time to waste.

It's faster now than the win 8 it replaced on my Dell laptop that's in use daily. It also boots almost instantly with the SSD in that laptop.

'Boots almost instantly' is a trick that Windows has been trying to play for a few years - but tends to carry it off only in the initial duration to the login screen - meanwhile the rest of it is still trying to catch up inside the box.

I installed (I have chosen not to use the word upgrade) win 10 on Friday. I'm not sure why but guess I was a sucker as Ms did not charge.

Since the install I can't say I have noticed any major improvements over win 8, although appreciate it's easy days.

The main desktop loads quicker but in turn it's slower to get to a stage where applications can be used.

I have also noted on a few occasions where my browser has loaded strange, almost laggy if you remember the old dial up days.

What has been a pain is things like Google apps sync not working properly. Solved these issues as they come up. But as mentioned this takes time, so intern costs.

I didn't sit there waiting hours for it to upgrade. I clicked the button and went off doing others jobs around the house. It is essentially the same old familiar windows so there is no steep learning curve to deal with which does waste time.

I've used 20 minutes maximum having a little nosey around, but apart from that, I'm finding the little changes as I go. No doubt there are now faster ways to do things that I've not yet discovered.

I've just tried the booting sequence and I can report that my mail client and google chrome both opened straight away once O was past the login screen. It is definitely quicker. The laptop has an i3 CPU and 8GB of ram and 2 x SSD drives. It was pretty nippy with 8.1 anyway on it.

As with anything technology based. We will all be forced to upgrade sooner or later. Support for win 7 or 8 will eventually be removed, admittedly not for many years and more of the bugs will be ironed out of 10 for those who wait longer I have no doubt.

All I'm saying is that this is the first time I remember upgrading windows and not having a single issue with drivers etc. Maybe I'm lucky but even the upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 left me without my printer working.

I've got a desktop & phone on 8 & a laptop on 7 to upgrade to10. Thought I'd leave it a bit to let the bugs to be sorted.
How long is the free upgrade available for?

^ The upgrade is available free for 1 year from 29th July.

First you could try looking in Windows Update, in Control Panel, and seeing if there are any updated drivers available in there (under Optional Updates usually).

If not, I'd have a look in Device Manager and see what model the soundcard is - you may be able to download drivers from the manufacturer of your computer for it.

They might just need re-installing or "updating to" them...

Best of luck finding window update in the control panel :D

Just type update into the search box now integrated into the start bar. I've been using the search facility for most things since win 7 personally. It's a bit more prominent now but works well for not having to find where things are.

An experience which one might have thought would be learned from?

Upgrading early is a risk.

People who upgrade typically tell you how wonderful it all is or how bad.

The spectrum in between is the hard bit to judge. From those who have minor issues through those who have more major ones but resolve.

I've see no net benefit in any update post XP.

I'd never recommend upgrading in the first few months unless there was a specific feature (or problem resolution) that was going to provide some tangible value to mitigate the risks.

I've found Win 8 and 8.1 to work a lot more slowly because of this odd assumption by MS that we should type to find basic things.

My task bar and desktop have become a lot lot more cluttered as I've pinned things to them to make up for the old Start button.

The loss of the old Start menu and it's non-resurrection under Win 8 was the most stupid thing any software company has ever done. And that includes the messing with Office interface post 2003.

They could have left the start button in its old form as an option .... but OH NO they knew so much better at Redmond. I think it was a deliberate attack on the old UI to try and coerce people off the old desktop onto the apps and tiles interface.

So we got Vista Mk II instead of XP or 7 Mk II.

Thing is that Microsoft do some really really good stuff and the legacy support was always good - but they've been so spooked by Apple and Google that they've forgotten their real strengths in the enterprise sector.

Possibly. I remedied the printer issue in 10-15 minutes. I'm no whizz but know my way around windows. No big deal.

Upgrading early is a risk.

Life is full of risks. If I had a single PC and my livelihood depended on it, I wouldn't have upgraded so hastily. I upgraded one machine that isn't used that often. It went well so I did the others once I was happy that I wasn't shooting myself in the foot.

They have had Technical and consumer previews of windows 10 out in the wild for many many months already, at least since October last year for the technical preview.

Is windows working more slowly, or are you?

Both 8 and 8.1 give you the ability to customise as you see fit.

Get with the times! :p

I upgraded straight away from 8.1 to 10 and maybe have been lucky in having no problems so far. Have to say I found 8.1 a really good and stable OS after the woes of Vista.

Nail hit on the head, it was the most stupid thing they have done in a long time. That said installing classic shell for windows immediately restored that functionality.

The only irritation I have found so far is not being able to set my home page in Edge to anything but MSN. I have followed the instructions but it will not remember my choice, also, even if you can set the home page it still seems to force you to use Bing as your search provider.

I can still use I.E or Chrome so no problem as such.
