Windows Vista ? BRILLIANT

Thanx Verytalldave, can you give me a link to that malware thing, the one TED sent ended up as an ad for Norton, & i think that would conflict with my AVG ?

Original problem was a full page Warning from Total Security saying my computer was in danger,& when you click on it, it just kept on wanting to charge me $49.95,Ad was in bad english with spelling mistakes,& took up the FULL screen.

Fake warning. They either want you to charge you money straight off or download and run some free AV software - which is in fact a real trojan - which will then warn you you that you have an infection and then prompt you to cough up to get the software to remove it.

And if people fall for it they seem to click to bypass their own installed AV software's warnings to let the stuff run and mess with their system.:(

I think that sounds about what it was Dryce, Just hope it'll be ok now.

Checking through this, if it was spyware, why didnt my AVG stop it ?

This stuff starts with a browser popup that has graphics designed to fool you into believing it's part of your system popping up an AV warning. The reaction of many users isn't to think "that's not my AV program" but rather do as they're told. It's the same effect as a fake authoritative person in a uniform ordering people about. Your AV software can't intercept this stuff.

So having got your attention and control of your mindset you then start clicking stuff believing what you're told. As long as it stays within the realm of your browser your AV software still doesn't kick in. It's not doing anything nasty to your system - just fooling you.

Youre dead right Dryce, thats what it was doing, but i did spot that it wasnt 1 of my normal icons. Fingers crossed, it seems ok now, thanx to all .

Hmmmmmm..........

I used to have one of those......:D

If anyone is unfortunate enough to accidentally pick up a malware horror doing the rounds at the moment entitled Windows Antivirus Pro (I know, it does sound convincing doesn't it?) then they have a real job on their hands to remove it.
Email me at verytalldave (at) hotmail (dot) com [ Replace the info in brackets with the @ and the . ]
And I will tell you how to get rid. Its not easy as the malware blocks almost all attempts of removal and your browser. You may even need to use a different uninfected PC to make contact.
Its an absolute horror to completely eradicate as it infects around 60 files which all need removal or cleaning before your machine is OK again.

If you want to have a stab at removal on your own, there are short tutorials on Youtube which are as good as anything else to help you........................

Make sure AVG is up to date and run it on the whole machine
Download Spybot Search and Destroy and follow instructions

It does not sound like anything too nasty, but with updated versions of av and spybot you should be reasonably safe.

Of course if you want to be bulletproof, run Ubuntu as your operating system :)

Hope this helps

Had Vista for a year, got on with it for a while but hard drive gave up and i am now back with good old XP home.
