I think my car still has the original windscreen and after 185K it's starting to show. Even when just after I have washed it I can see all these very fine scratches. At night lights look streeky like the windscreen is dirty but its not. Anyone have any ideas how to polish them out? there must be a proper glass polish (not cleaner) out there?

You can buy glass polishing kits from Machine Mart, alternatively don't AutoWindscreens offer this service?

Light scratches can be polished out using jewellers rouge (cerium oxide) and an electric hand held buffer.A lubricant such as washing up liquid needs to be mixed in with the powder.

Try smokers toothpaste......seriously !!! ( Boots the Chemist )
That sounds odd enough to work. i'll be off down boots at lunchtime...

Just one thing.

If you can feel the scratches with your fingernail forget it. You will not remove them without a significant removal of the glass itself. This will leave you with a slightly concaved, and weakened, screen which could disort your view as well. MOT?

Portzy.

Get your Merc specialist to get it replaced (on the insurance for 50 quid) at the same place they get all their other cars done. A lot less hassle and a proper clear window.

(Read myriad tales of woe about replacement screens littering this forum first though)

I went through this with my Merc and my previous car. The scratches were normal wear and tear, not serious very very annoying.

I bought an electric polisher, and every polishing substance known to man. (OK, about 10 products(including toothpaste - I was desperate OK!)) The only one that worked AT ALL was glass polishing compound from, I think, The Polishing Company. After 5 hours with an electric polisher I made a barely discernible difference to the scratches. All in all it was a pointless waste of my time (and about £50).

The solution was a new windscreen. Was it worth it? Oh Yes indeedy - like driving a new car.

Exactly. I was that soldier some years ago with a Tigra I had. At one time my roof tiles were losing grit due to age and some of it blew onto the screen and....., well you know what came next. I tried everything as well, ended up with a new screen.

Thats the second time I have admitted to owning a Tigra, whats happening to me? :o :o :o

Ha! My wife's got one. I call it the Tumble Drier, on account of it's plush ride. I suppose I could mock it for it's various (and numerous) shortcomings, but in the end it's saving grace is the lift-off oversteer. YeeHaaaar.

Which is about the same as the excess your insurance company would expect if the screen was replaced because it was broken.

My screen is scratched and pitted and it has a nice big chip taken out of it on the passenger side. Not failed an MOT for it but I wonder if it could be taken as needing replacement rather than repair (I want the rain sensor screen for another nice mod!).

Exactly! Fortunately my screen became broken shortly afterward and was replaced by the ins. co.

i wanted a rain sensor one at the time (as an upgrade mod), but they wouldn't do it as they said there was more trickery to the rain-sensing wipers than just the sensor on teh screen.

That's correct, you also have to plug the sensor in.

AFAIK it's a simple plug-in job, it may require activation through the diagnostic interface I suppose.
