Hi Guys

My wiper keeps on popping off at the ball and socket joint at the end of the cam.
Is there some sort of spring clip missing? Is there an easy fix? I keep on having to dismantle and place it back in but its dead loose.

I have attached a couple of snaps

Thanks

Karl

Is there a teflon type insert in which your ball and socket joint pop into? If so, this could be worn out and the cause of the b & s jumping out

No, I cannot feel any insert.

Can anyone supply one or know where I can get one avoiding the main dealers if poss?

hi

My 2001 E220cdi had the same problem last year which i did a temporary fix that funnily is still working today.

Over time the ball and socket wears away and the ball keeps falling out of the socket and really needs to be replaced.

Mine went the xmas before last and i needed the car urgently with working wipers.

I removed the wiper mechanism and drilled a thin hole through both the ball and the socket and fitted a long bolt and nut through them both with a washer to allow movement.

It has worked now for over a year, the nut and bolt stops the ball from coming out of the socket.

I will change the wiper unit when I get round to getting a second hand one but until then the fix will continue to work.

May help you

regards

Chris

Cheers Chris

I was thinking of trying to do the same myself but I wasnt confident about removing the wiper assembly.

I will have a go if anyone could assist?????:)

Done the same a number of times, it works, and works well :)

I have also fixed wipers with a through bolt. One thing to watch is that the bolt head and nut can't come into contact with any other part of mechanism or bodywork. I would also say put either a bit of thread lock on the nut or a double nut.
Don't know about the merc one but on a Freelander the ball was steel so took a fair bit to drill through.
