Can anyone advise what options are available from mercedes and other retailers?

I am looking to either just swap tyres or put the 18's away and take a 17' tyre and wheel as I have been told size of brakes mean don't take down to 16's.

Appreciate your thoughts

I have Continental Winter Contacts on 17" rims which were factory fitted when I collected the car 20 months ago. I have used them for 33k miles and two summers and there's still a fair bit of wear left on them. Very happy with their cold weather performance, summer understandably less impressive but still good enough to convince me not to change. I'll almost certainly use them again in future: Continental WinterContact TS830 | the Continental WinterContact TS830 reviewed and rated | the online tyre guide

Hi if you are looking for winter tyres normally Mercedes have a preferred wheel and tyre recommendation for your vehicle if you are looking to stay with genuine MB? also is your car fitted with TPMS sensors as this needs to be taken in to consideration as well. If you would like to email me your reg/chassis number i will happily supply the correct recommendations for you W204.

Thanks Simon

Thanks for the advice I am going to contact MB $tealers and get quotes and then compare. Could I not look at just replacing the rubber? Keeps the look of the car....

I do indeed have tyre pressure sensors - what will I need to consider?

There are 2 types of MB tyre pressure monitoring systems. The standard one which uses the ABS wheel speed sensors [ just warns of deflating tyres] or the more advanced one which gives specific pressure readouts of each tyre. These have specific pressure transponder units within the tyre mounted internally on the valve assembly. These require extra care when fitting new wheels / tyres as needless to say they wont function if not physically transferred. The first requires nothing to be done except possibly a reset from the instrument cluster menu with the new tyres/wheels fitted.

If I had a car with big flash alloys, I probably wouldn't want to keep getting the tyres changed on the wheels as i'm sure it would start to take its tole on the paint finish. I would keep them safe in the garage and get some steel/winter for out in the salt.

I just get an old set of alloys on ebay, then I can swap when I like.

[My local] MB stealer seem to struggle working out what is required, but in general they need to be the same size for the insurance companies; here is a list of rules by insurance company https://www.abi.org.uk/Insurance-and-savings/Products/Motor-insurance/Winter-tyres

Winter tyres are hard to find in the higher speeds for obvious reasons, this is not a problem for the MOT, but the AA says you are ok to drop from V to H say.

But then 16.7 of this link says you can't The Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2001

Hence I get identical alloys and full speed same size tyres, mine are Vs so that is possible, for the more exotic MBs I don't know what you are supposed to do.

I haven't researched it, but this is probably one of those areas (like the lighting regulations) where EU regulations trump UK ones.

All modern MB cars have a "permanent" or "winter tyre" speed limiter which, if used, physically prevents the vehicle exceeding the speed rating of the tyres. You will also find, if you read the car's manual, that MB recommend winter tyre fitments speed rated at lower than the car's v-max.

I never got a manual (except for the sat-nav doorstep), and the online thing is not too helpful.

The local MB dealer says they supply H's but have nothing in writing.

Chris

The online manual always used to have the same large section on permissible wheel and tyre combinations as the hard copy version. As an alternative, call MBUK Customer Support on 01908 245000 and ask them what wheel / tyre size combinations and speed ratings are recommended fitments. I've always found them to be very helpful.

The Interactive Owners Manual for the W/S204 is available here.

Follow the navigation path In Depth>Wheels and tyres>Wheel and tyre combinations and you'll see all the recommended fitments for your car, both summer and winter. FWIW, with the exception of the C63, the winter fitments are all H rated.

If you are wary of dropping down 2 speed ratings there are lots of V rated winter tyres out there in many sizes. For winter motoring the MB advice is to have the same wheel /tyre width all round and default to the slightly narrower front tyres size.

Got a few options - MB are offering £1300 for 17" alloys with Dunlop SP Winter tyres inclusive of fitting and storing. Quite tempted for ease and alloys. Anything I need to consider/check?

I have had my car for just over 2 years now and I bought a set of 17" alloys with Dunlop SP Winter tyres from MB. This keeps my 18s in good condition. MB do a free swap over from summers to winters and return the summers back home and vice versa in spring.

This will be my third year with the winter tyres and they have been great. They advise you swap when temperatures are consistently 7C or under.

Check with your insurers before fitting, I am going thru this right now, MB dealer says they will supply H rated tyres, "quotemehappy" (Aviva) insurance say I am not covered if I drop from a V.

Still working on it.
