I've got a '98 W202, and it's got 116000 miles on the clock. I bought it when it had 111000 miles in August and I think it had 2 previous owners. My question is, what is the chance that I'll get it to 150000 before something bad happens to the engine? I know it depends on how I drive it etc, but I'm 20 and it's a manual, so there's more revving than an Auto for example. ANy help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Which engine is it?

If it has been serviced regularly it will easily see 150K, there are lots of MB's with astronomical mileage.

Can't see any problem there.. it is a Mercedes after all :bannana: :bannana:

if it helps put your mind at rest, our 230TE is coming up to 230k miles and still going strong - look after it, it will last for years

As long as you service it say every 6 months you should easily see 200k, these days the bodywork is more important in the long run

......there is a Black C Class taxi in Chatham with 550,000 miles on the clock!

your engine is just run in :D as long as it is well serviced it should not give you any problems.

Only start to worry if the engine starts to breath - Take off filler cap with engine running, if you get smoke - Worry.

Brian smoke from where

I think he means through the oil filler cap. ;)

If you get smoke from this point whilst the engine is running, then you have a good indicator of a 'tired' engine

ok so say you get a little smoke with the engine off when you take off the filler cap after a run and the engine is to temp what will this mean and will this apply to both petrol and diesels

I'll have to try that. Sure I won't get a face full of oil?

I'd say its all relative really.

I mean any car, with a given mileage/age is expected to have a certain amount of 'wear and tear'.

As long as this wear is not excessive, then you have little to worry about.

Out of the all the cars that I have had, maybe one or two would have been classed as approaching 'tired' with regards to the amount of engine wear. Eg, one 190E with circa 130-140K would occasionally emit a hint of smoke when pushed particularly hard - required maybe 1/4-1/2 litre of oil between services, but as the car was ~ 16 years old, I wasn't going to spend a fortune on an engine overhaul! To me, this would be characteristic and expected for this car with that mileage and age. Perhaps new valve stem seals or whatever may have fixed it, but nothing to lose sleep over! :) Car was exactly the same 2-3 years later, until my friend sold it!

I haven't seen a smokey C class before - except them bloody diesels! :p :p

(runs for cover! :D )

Will

Graham - You shouldn't get a facefull of oil, just a little splatter from the rockers.

Yes smoke from filler cap, with cap removed, means wear on the piston rings and the crankcase is "breathing". You might get a little haze on old engines, but you should not get a lot. If there is excessive wear then you will get smoke. This is a very quick check if you are buying a car and you want to check the condition of the engine. If smoking - DONT BUY.

^^Wise Words!^^ :)
