My W124 CE suddenly developed a worrying "clonking" from the back end. It was quite hard to describe but it sounded like something either knocking the inside of the fuel tank/body panel or perhaps a loose suspension component.
After putting up with it for a couple of days - and being unable to pinpoint exactly what conditions caused it - I decided to "bite the bullet" and have a poke around underneath. Brain thinking of big pound signs all the time
Looking underneath I found that a piece of gravel apx. 1 inch in diameter had got caught in the space between bottom of the spring and the wishbone. Bizarely this stone wouldnt just fall out and was making a lovely creaky, clonking sound when the spring compressed. Lifting up the back end and removing the stone fixed the noise
Moral of the story...not *all* of the noises are as expensive as they sound!
