i have brought my son a desktop, and cant get the wireless connection to work.

it is xp and the wirless is RaUI, it is a nightmare, it says it is connected, but 'cant find server' and the ip adress and submask dont appear to be correct, and often arnt even shown...

it also apears that the wireless software is constantly swiching on and off, ie disconnecting for a split second, then back connected for a few seconds, then off again

can anyone help me please, he needs it for his homework.

I am pretty certain that you just need to tell the router (under wireless security section) the systems MAC address. That make sense to you?

The router only needs to know the MAC address if that security requirement is enabled, I'd be very surprised if it is on by default. If it was on you would fail to get a connection at all if it didn't know the MAC address.

As above, which XP service pack do you have? There were significant wireless network improvements made in SP2 and you should have that on as a minimum if you are attempting to do anything with Wireless networking.

sp2 is installed, i will install sp3 if and when i get it to connect!

again, i have installed the software from the disk supplied with the card, it may need updating, but cant do it till i connect, a bit like the chicken and the egg! (yes it was the egg first, but you know what i mean lol)

as for the mac address, i have found it on a sticker under the router, but it has more characters than the boxes on the software screen allow???

You also need to consider allowing windows to manage the wireless connection rather than the device's software. I had exact same problem with an old dlink wireless device. using it's own wireless manager it was all over the place..

Windows Zero Config is faster and more stable under XP SP3.
In the meantime can you get a small USB memory stick and use that to update the drivers?

yes jon, that is my next port of call, then if that dont work, the comp is goin out the window! lol

Seriously if you're considering throwing it - get a USB Wifi adapter, the newfangled modern ones are pretty good and EASY to set up.
