You first drive of a Mercedes

My first drive was of a W201 190E 2.6 auto belonging to my then boss back from Harrogate to London in about 1991. Lovely ride, creamy six, solid feel and a real sense of occasion looking down the bonnet at that star. Didn't buy my first MB (a new AMG C32 estate) until 2002 though.

First Merc (in fact first car) I ever drove was my dad's 1969 280SE (W108?) when I was about 12, along the driveway to a hotel. I was doing about 5 mph up the drive (the car in 'creep' mode) and by the time we got to the carpark, I'd forgotten which pedal was the brake and which was the accelerator. Purely by chance I hit the right one and disaster was avoided.

My CLK430 when I bought it. I just turned 21 so it was pretty damn tasty at the time. Good fun lol!

First MB I drove was a 1990 560SEC right after I collected it having bought it blind on eBay. This one in fact. I still miss it and still haven't managed to persuade Jay Manek to part with his Blue SEC, despite asking every 6 months or so.

Very classy!

First Mercedes I had a ride in was my father's 1969 Mercedes Benz 220 when it was brand new.

First Mercedes I ever drove myself was a 1970 Mercedes Benz 220 (not same car obviously). But I only got to drive it in 1982 - it was 12 years old by then....

The first Mercedes I actually owned is my current 2006 W203 C180K (after running Vauxhall Omegas for 10 years) .

just bought my first merc, after owning audi , bmw and so on,,love the look's of my c220 amg sport + white coupe but it's a little more sluggish from the usual petrol cars ive had, didnt like the handbrake but quickly getting used to it. will be getting it remapped in the near future....the more i drive it the better it get's

My Dads' 1973 W114 280E in 1985. His brother had owned it before him. Terrific old car, it gave me a scare though once by spinning up in kickdown in heavy rain and doing a full 360. Oops

My first drive in a Mercedes was in October 2004. It was Mrs D's birthday, and whilst driving home from a birthday shopping trip she wanted to show me a car she'd seen which she liked on the forecourt of a Mercedes specialist. It was a very early pre-facelift ML270 CDi with the factory fitted AMG kit.

A quick test drive later and we had decided that we liked the ML although this specific car wasn't the one for us. A quick look online and realised we could get a facelift car for similar money so we went straight to another dealer and bought a facelift ML270 CDi, without a test drive, and we've been driving Mercedes ever since.

However it could so easily have been a completely different story. Shortly before I called into an empty Official Porsche Centre on a wet Saturday afternoon. Baby D was asleep in our Vauxhall Omega, so Mrs D stayed in the car and I went inside to ask for a brochure on the Cayenne. There were no customers so the salesmen were all stood at the welcome desk.

They didn't really offer me a welcome. They were rude, laughed at me, and handed me a brochure without saying a word. The uncomfortable silence meant I turned and walked out. If they'd have said, come on take a look, why don't you bring your wife inside and we'll get you both a drink, then they'd have sold a Cayenne that day. I called in again in the ML a few weeks later and the experience couldn't have been more different.

We bought the C32 AMG a few months later, and although I'd wanted one since I first read the Autocar Road Test, I think I would have bought a 911 instead, had we bought the Cayenne that day instead of the ML. Strange how things turn out, and it's put me off buying a Porsche ever since. I keep looking at the Cayenne Turbo, but we always end up with an ML63 instead!

My first experience was driving a w123 gold 280E. My mate had just bought it but he had to take his own car back home so I drove his new purchase instead!
The feeling of superiority that the car gave was immense. The doors, the switches and that ultra tough MB Tex. The second experience was of a 500SEC that I part-exed my 730i for after it did my head in with its constant computerised warnings.
