YOUR FIRST CAR

Thought for the day: 1600 people die a year on Britain's roads.
A quarter of them (400) as a result of collisions with drivers aged 17-19. (And drivers aged 17-19 don't drive THAT many miles)

'Interesting, but what's the "Thought for the day" Mike?' you say.

"History is told by the survivors"

Car insurance was a bit steep for my Manta in 94 (£900 for the first year with no NCB) - car was a group 11 or 12 I think (when it was out of 20).

It wasn't like it has been in the last 10 / 15 years though where youngsters are paying so many times this premium for regular cars, let alone anything fruity.

@Red C220 - I can remember all 16 of my number plates!

A lovely blue and rust Mk3 Escort.

1.1 litres of Dagenham finest crap.

it’s fate? Blew the engine up

2nd. Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia. My old man told me to get something not expensive on insurance. Little did he know, it had the same engine as a Xr3i. I knew though [emoji16]

I suspect that registration is wrong unless it was a very futuristic September 1984 car?

My first (as in paid for and owned by me) was a Mini Cooper. I wasn’t old enough to drive it on the road, so my cousin drove it home and into the family garage. We lived on a private road and keen to show my dear mum what a smart son she had given birth too, I got her into the garage and into the rear of the car. Well almost ‘into’ as she climbed in over the reclined drivers seat, there was a horrible crunch. She fell straight through the cars floor.

By ‘floor’ it was apparent that we were talking about some hardboard, newspaper and sticky filler.

Further inspection made it clear that this was actually the most solid bit of the car that resembled a ripped up fishing net, held together by newspaper and glue.

It never recovered but my dear mum did. Scratched legs and tears from laughing.

Whilst still in possession of the Mini. I bought a MKI ford Cortina with CND tail lights. Like nearly all Fords of it’s time, it could smell rain in another continent rendering it a non-starter. No matter how many times I turned the screwdriver in the ignition it would just sit there taunting me. It was stolen and then (this is true) brought back again. How good was that then??

the first car that I bought was a Fiat Strada.

Designed by computers, built by robots ...

Looking back I really liked that car, it went OK when compared to my peers in their Mk2 Escorts or Morris 1300s. It didn't have a spot of rust, never broke down and I completely abused it inside and out.

Never saw that Robert clip, do recall the squirming embarrassment of watching the following clip with my parents:

I loved that sketch.

My Dad had a similar experience in his Morris Minor when giving his portly brother-in-law a lift. Apparantly he slowly got lower and lower and when they checked the metal under the left-hand seat bolts had basically disappeared.

Can't speak for all, but I'm told many first cars used to be Dad's second car, with the young driver as named driver. "Different times."

Mind you, even today some "Company car schemes" allow the addition of a 19 year new driver as an authorised driver of the Company car, for even quite mainstream SUV's. (Parents must be mad, but just saying).

I wish my first car was my dads old car at the time it was a 7 series V8 BMW :D :p:D

Showing my age a bit here but the first car I bought myself was a '13 plate C250 Amg Sport Plus. It was the same color as my current car (Palladium Silver) which I loved. Swapping out the stock grille for the C63 equivalent really made the difference, though, so I'd definitely recommend getting that done.
Thinking back, it was quite a good daily, too. Easily returned 38MPG+ even after a map and me being heavy footed.
